Full time Administrative Professional. The basic function of this position is to recruit, hire, train, evaluate, dismiss, and develop lifeguard staff that will support University Recreation, College of Education, and Athletics for three campus aquatic facilities. This position will be responsible for development of aquatic programming including swim lessons, safety education, and aquatic fitness.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Staff Supervision (30%) Responsible for hiring, dismissing, training, evaluating, and scheduling of Graduate Assistant (.5 FTE) and approximately thirty-five facility lifeguards (6.5 FTE). Develops and implements comprehensive training program including WAC required training and certification, emergency response, customer service, risk management, and conflict resolution.
Program Management (20%) Responsible for development, planning and managing of aquatic programming including youth and adult instruction, aquatic fitness, and safety education. Responsible for ensuring WAC compliance and proper supervision for all aquatic programming including physical education classes, recreation programming, and all varsity Athletic contests. Responsible for coordination of special events and aquatic rentals.
Risk Management (20%) Responsible for the safety and risk management procedures for all aquatic facilities including involvement of policy development, delivery of staff training, and development of implementation plan. Ensures compliance with WAC in relation to operation of aquatic facilities.
Fiscal Management (15%) Responsible for budget development, management, and tracking for aquatic budgets. Manage, develop, and verify payroll budget in excess of $100,000 annually. Ensure compliance with all department, university, and state policies for payroll processes and regulations.
Manage equipment ordering including items safety equipment required by WAC and equipment required for all University Recreation aquatic programming.
Manage and direct operations for Safety Education (1000+) certifications/year. This includes planning, organizing, implementing, reviewing processes and procedures. Complete and submit all reports, participant/staff records, inventory in a timely manner.
Collaboration (10%) Responsible for coordinating facility use and policy development for aquatic facilities shared among University Recreation, College of Education, and Intercollegiate Athletics. Coordinate aquatic programming needs for each user in of three campus pools.
Additional Duties (5%) Serves on Department and University committees as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director. Lead programs including first aid classes as needed.
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (Business, Recreation, Sport Management, Higher Education or related field) and three (3) years of experience directly related to the specialty area. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Certification by American Red Cross in Lifeguard Training and Lifeguard Instructor (LGI)
Current Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operation (AFO)
Minimum of one (1) year supervisory experience.
Demonstrated success in personnel training and supervision.
Ability to collaborate effectively as a member of a goal-oriented team.
Knowledge of Windows based computer system and Microsoft applications.
Master’s Degree in Business, Recreation, Sport Management, Higher Education or related field.
Strong communication, organizational, and leadership/management skills.
Four or more years of progressively responsible relevant professional experience.
Experience in higher education recreation or student service setting.
Experience in the development and implementation of extensive staff training programs.
Experience in the development and management of budgets.
Experience in the management and operations of special events.
Current Lifeguard Instructor Trainer or Water Safety Instructor Trainer Certification
NIRSA membership and/or involvement
Experience working or living among other cultures; a track record of working with and/or for under-served and under-represented populations.
