Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of Campus Recreation, the Marketing and Participant Engagement Specialist is a newly created position to serve in the new, state of the art, 118,700 square-foot Mashouf Wellness Center (MWC) opening in 2017. The incumbent oversees and supervises development and implementation of marketing strategies for the Mashouf Wellness Center and Campus Recreation, and associated programs and services. Areas of oversight include marketing strategic planning, web-site development and management, developing and maintaining branding standards, graphic design, social media outreach, collateral/print marketing/advertising, press releases and communication management, and video/audio production. This position also oversees participant engagement support for the department, working to increase the breadth and depth of student participation in the MWC and Campus Recreation programs.
The opening of the Mashouf Wellness Center will draw focus to efforts to increase student life programming and student engagement, and providing co-curricular high-impact practices. The incumbent will develop marketing strategies and materials for the department¿s various programs and services, traditional and non-traditional, to communicate out to the campus and larger community. The incumbent must utilize marketing strategies that reflect inclusiveness on a very culturally diverse campus. The incumbent will also need to have a strong abilities with video production and communications to keep new and fresh content on various types of digital information screens throughout the MWC.
This is a one (1) year probationary position.
The employee will become permanent at their classification, upon successful completion of the probationary period.
- Working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, practices, principles and techniques related to communications in public affairs, media, marketing, and/or sports information areas. - Thorough knowledge of and ability to use effectively media outlets including planning media coverage and media publicity campaigns for the university and events. - Ability to build and manage more sophisticated media contacts. - Demonstrated ability to keep abreast of campus events and subject matter expertise in relation to current events to identify and capitalize on media opportunities that will promote the university and increase positive media coverage. - Working knowledge of copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to publications and the media. - Thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles and formats. Ability to effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals. - Ability to analyze and select pertinent facts and integrate them into communication vehicles. - Strong story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills. Knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver media messages. - Working knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods. Ability to apply market research to identify communication needs and target audiences. - Ability to apply appropriate statistical techniques and methods to research or sports information. - Exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening and interpretive skills. - Ability to provide lead work direction.
- Master's Degree in Sports Management, Recreation, Exercise Science, or a related field. - Understanding of the application of student development concepts. - Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters. - Experience with developing and promoting programs and services within area of oversight through a lens of social justice, sustainability, accessibility, and non-traditional as well as traditional programming. - Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Strategic Values and Core Competencies for NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation, and SF State¿s Strategic Plan values. - Experience supervising college students in a college campus setting. - Experience with new program and service development and implementation. - Experience overseeing marketing strategies for a large recreation department including creating and implementing a marketing strategic plan, setting up systems for content creation, and assessment of effectiveness of techniques. - Experience with employing novel strategies with engaging participants. - Demonstrated technology, software, and hardware skills including the use of Microsoft Office, email and the internet; and - Experience providing high quality customer service, and contributing to a positive, friendly, work and wellness environment.
Ability to: - Oversee daily operations of marketing areas including staff, inter-departmental communication, content creation; - Work effectively with students who have a variety of skill and experience levels, and who will be working in various levels, from entry to program management levels. - Rapidly acquire general knowledge of overall operation and functions of the marketing and participant engagement areas; - Develop and implement policies and procedures that ensure safety and risk management. - Use initiative and resourcefulness in planning and implementing short and long-range improvements. - Preferred Certification: First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Certification.
Incumbent's duties take place mostly in an office setting or member interface spaces, with primary locations at the Mashouf Wellness Center. Incumbent must be able to succeed in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment; work variable nights, weekends and/or holidays, on-campus or off-site, indoors and outdoors, depending upon work conditions and demands, including an occasional overnight stay; use computers and other communication tools for extended periods of time; and competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and campus community.
