This position is responsible for leadership, overall administration and supervision of recreational programming, staff/personnel development, facility oversight, and budgets Facilities responsibilities include: the Recreation and Athletic Complex (125,000 square-feet), the Aquatic and Fitness Center (91,000 square-feet), and Skyline Fitness Center (11,000 square-feet), the Edge, Mason’s Center for Team and Organizational Learning Challenge Course, as well as numerous outdoor facilities and fields.
The incumbent will understand and demonstrate effective team leadership, and understand the myriad of well-being issues faced by Mason’s growing and highly diverse student population.
The Director will have supervision of the Assistant Director, Marketing; Assistant Director, Competitive Sports; Assistant Director for Risk Management, Camps and Aquatic Programming; and the Fitness Director. The incumbent will also have indirect oversight of Intramural/Camps Coordinator and the Assistant Director, Club Sports and Assessment. Each of these units provides the platform for robust activities and programming to the Mason community.
The successful candidate will partner with the Associate Dean of University Life, as leaders in supporting programs and initiatives to advance Mason’s Strategic Goal #7. This goal is centered on the university-wide effort to become a Well-Being University. This individual will also collaborate with university faculty, staff, students and off-campus stakeholders. This position will report to the Associate Dean in the division of University Life.

Must have a master’s degree in kinesiology, sports management, health education, recreation administration, business administration, student affairs or related fields;
Significant full-time, progressively responsible experience in recreation management, higher education administration, physical education, or student affairs (minimum of seven to 10 years of experience is strongly desired);
Demonstrated experience in developing partnerships to achieve strategic institutional goals;
Significant experience in the creation, development and evaluation of complete recreational sports and well-being programs; and
Must be student-centered and have a passion for well-being, diversity and inclusion, and student success.
Doctoral degree in related fields;
Knowledge of student development theory and the health and well-being issues facing college students;
Proven effective written and verbal communication skills;
Experience in using data and assessment to inform decision-making;
Knowledge and ability to work with diverse staff and student populations;
Experience with supervision and management of multiple areas; and
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, student learning and development, and willingness to being an active member of campus community.
