The Associate Director of Sports & Wellness is responsible for the administration of the physical education classes, group fitness sessions, and special events. The Associate Director oversees and manages the Chalon Fitness Center, including the student staff, fitness equipment, and membership. The Associate Director acts on behalf of the Director when assigned.
Manage the Physical Education academic classes (PED) which include 1 credit hour classes in areas such as total body conditioning, cycling, martial arts, Pilates, yoga, and various forms of dance. Oversight includes supervising and hiring part-time faculty and purchasing equipment.
Plan, coordinate, market, and implement group fitness sessions for drop-in participants. Recruit, hire, and supervise instructors for various forms of fitness.
Collaborate with Director and Assistant Director to create and manage a comprehensive fitness program for faculty, staff, and students.
Develop, market, and manage special events and programs to promote active, healthy lifestyles such as the annual Athenian Day.
Oversee and manage the Chalon Fitness Center including hiring, training and evaluating student staff. Collaborate to determine fitness equipment appropriate for the fitness center.
Coordinate Chalon Fitness Center membership programs including the "Dear Neighbor" program.
Oversee operating budget for the Chalon Fitness Center and programming.
Teach PED 100 Physical Education for Liberal Studies majors (1 unit class)
Provide general support to the Director of Sports & Wellness in the operation of the total program of the department
Act on behalf of the Director when assigned.
Other duties and responsibilities:
Provide support for the Doheny Sports & Wellness program and facility as needed.
Contribute to the Division of Student Affairs in the general education and development of students outside the classroom.
Participate in various university committees and task forces as requested.
Perform other job related duties, as assigned.
General knowledge of higher education administration and student development theory along with sound understanding of the concepts of fitness and recreational activities and the educational sports, as well as staff and student development.
Sufficient working knowledge of anatomy, physiology and fitness principles and women's issues necessary for implementing a complete fitness program.
Abilities & Skills:
Effectively incorporate classes and programs into a comprehensive fitness program. Ability to teach and evaluate physical education classes such as total body conditioning, Zumba, cycling, yoga, Pilates, martial arts, and various forms of dance.
Efficiently and effectively manage a multi-faceted facility and program maintaining exemplary levels of customer service throughout all programs and services.
Ability to foster and promote an integrated team approach to student programming and successfully assess programming impact on learning outcomes.
A commitment to outstanding student service and teamwork are essential.
Strong supervisory skills and excellent fiscal, oral and written communication, organizational, prioritization, administrative, teaching, and interpersonal skills.
Bachelor's degree required from an accredited college/university, preferably the degree is in recreation, physical education, sports management, exercise science, wellness, or related field.
Master's degree or 5 years related experience preferred.
Two or more years’ experience required in programming and teaching in areas of fitness, wellness, physical education and/or recreation, preferably in higher education.
Licenses & Certifications:
Current First-aid/AED and CPR certification required.
Fitness Instructor certification from ACSM, ACE, AFAA, or comparable organization required.
