The fitness coordinator is a key member of the Salem State University Gassett Fitness Center staff that offers programs including fitness, wellness, aquatics, intramural sports, club sports, informal recreation and special events. Under the direct supervision of the associate director of campus recreation, the fitness coordinator will oversee all aspects of the fitness and wellness program to include personal/small group training, fitness assessment, non-credit instructional programs, special events, incentive programs, group exercise instruction and specialty fitness classes, while assisting with the operation of the Gassett Fitness Center. The fitness coordinator supervises student staff which may include fitness attendants, membership specialists, facility supervisors, lifeguards, swim instructors, group exercise instructors and personal trainers. The fitness coordinator will also supervise part-time instructors and trainers. This position requires regular early morning and some evening and weekend commitments.

Duties and Responsibilities:
(E) Responsible for the supervision of the day to day operations of the Gassett Fitness Center and of the group exercise, instructional, and personal training programs including registration, fees, attendance records and evaluation
(E) Plan, develop, promote and deliver a comprehensive fitness and wellness program to include fitness consultations/assessments, educational seminars, wellness events, incentive programs, group exercise initiatives, personal/small group training programs, instructional programs and specialized activities
(E) Recruit, interview, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate staff in areas of responsibility/department
(E) Develop, review and revise policies for the department, fitness and wellness programming areas
(E) Thorough understanding of risk management protocols as it relates to fitness and wellness programming. Ability to develop risk management policies and procedures to ensure participant safety
(E) Provide leadership in the areas of student and recreational program development through the creation and implementation of continuing education, regular training sessions and meetings
(E) Maintain current knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively perform and/or teach and/or assess for a wide variety of group exercise classes and training programs, including the research of industry trends
(E) Coordinate group exercise and personal training certification programs (i.e. ACE Curriculum)
(E) Conduct CPR/AED/First Aid certification courses for fitness center staff
(E) Supervise the utilization, operation, inventory, and maintenance of all fitness equipment
Assist with staff hiring, payroll and administrative records for department
(E) Evaluate, track and compile statistical information for fitness and wellness program areas including daily, weekly and monthly measures
Collaborate with the Wellness Cluster to achieve goals and student learning outcomes as they relate, but are not limited to, training, programming, marketing and assessment. Collaborate with the Wellness Cluster programming team on general operation, supervision of staff, instruction, training, and wellness education
Provide inclusive and alternative fitness programming for diverse ability levels and develop, plan, administer and evaluate special population programming
Develop and edit health related educational materials, website, schedules, training manuals, lectures, and programs. Provide education and outreach programs
Serve as an advocate for health and fitness within higher education and its support of student development and continual education
Assist with the planning and implementation of department, fitness and wellnessprogramsand related special events, including: marketing, on and off campus outreach programming, lead group exercise classes and personal training sessions as needed
Utilizes Map-Works in support of student success
Serves on committees as assigned
Demonstrates sensitivity to students with a diversity of learning styles
Other duties as assigned
Bachelor's degree in recreation, physical education, sports management, kinesiology or related field
Two or more years of experience overseeing fitness and wellness programming in a college or university setting
Two or more years of experience in successful management of student staff in a collegiate recreation program
Nationally Accredited Certification in both Personal Training and Group Exercise
Demonstrated ability to teach a wide variety of group exercise classes, small group training programs, and work with clients with a variety of needs and abilities
CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
Membership and participation in the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA)
Strong interpersonal skills including conflict resolution and group leadership
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to effectively schedule time and meet deadlines
Budget preparation, monitoring, and payroll/invoice tracking experience
Master's Degree in recreation, physical education, sports management, kinesiology or related field
Experience with Fusion point of sale/facility access software
CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor certified or ability to obtain upon hire
Experience developing and delivering presentations to groups
Knowledge in assessment methods and activities
