Syracuse University is seeking a visionary Director of Recreation Services to lead a team of recreational professionals to manage, promote and facilitate the opening and ongoing service provision of a new recreational facility opening Fall 2019. This position will be ultimately responsible for leadership of all services, programs, facilities and staff within the Department of Recreation Services. Recreation Services serves the entire Syracuse University Community and will be connected both functionally and physically within a new larger wellness facility complex housing departments serving the health, well-being and wellness needs of our student community.
Responsibilities: Ultimate responsibility for the overall operation and leadership of a new recreational facility and comprehensive recreation program including aquatics, sport clubs, fitness classes, ice pavilion programs, intramurals, Late Night at the Gym, Neighborhood Youth Recreation Program, Challenge Course, open recreation, outdoor recreation programs, and wellness programs to meet the diverse abilities and interests of the university community.
Develop, implement, and assess an innovative recreation service organizational plan focusing on promoting wellness, leadership development, and outdoor education through recreation experiences.
Supervise approximately 8 professional staff and more than 250 student employees
Coordinate department and university-wide activities with campus and off-campus units. Work collaboratively with other units within the Health and Well-being portfolio to ensure a coordinated wellness student experience.
Establish and manage multiple budgets
Develop and implement policies, procedures and new program directions to enhance collaboration between the Dept. of Recreation Services and other units, including but not limited to: the Dept. of Exercise Science, the School of Management and other schools and colleges, ROTC, SUNY ESF, the Office of Student Activities, and the Dept. of Athletics.
Serve on institutional or divisional committees; coordinate recreational initiatives with community groups as appropriate
Experience (approximately 5 years’ experience in the field required) Demonstrated ability to organize and direct recreation programs Demonstrated ability to manage staff and facilities Budget planning and interpretation skills Ability to collaborate with diverse constituencies in a shared governance environment Data management and computing skills Marketing skills Excellent oral and written communication skills
