35% - Program Development and Supervision:
Coordinate/lead trips and clinics including backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, spelunking, and rock climbing; Build collaborative relationships & programs with campus departments to foster student involvement; Prepare/submit monthly and annual statistical reports; Develop learning outcomes and program assessment; Structure and manage day to day operations to meet industry standards and safety regulations; Manage outdoor equipment rental program.
25% - Administrative and Personnel:
Manage Adventure Education professional staff coordinator(s); Assist with hiring, training, supervising, and evaluation of student employees; Monitor & ensure staff payroll and attendance records in alignment with department standards; Conduct annual evaluations of staff; Train select students to become trip leaders.
20% - Fiscal and Property Management:
Track and monitor program expenses; Establish and maintain individual trip budgets; Recommend/Purchase needed equipment and supplies; Document inventory tracking and depreciation/replacement program; Prepare and submit annual operating budgets; Recommend rental contracts for approval.
20% - Program & Professional Involvement:
Provide feedback regarding departmental programs, equipment, and operations by conducting daily observations/engaging in programs and using equipment/facilities; Immediately report safety concerns to the functional area supervisor; Be active professionally through research, publications, presentations, speaking engagements, and involvement in professional associations; Maintains positive co-worker relationships and fosters an environment of trust and inclusion; Contribute positively to the work environment by participating in honest dialog that is indicative of the department’s culture of teamwork; Represent University Recreation for various University/community functions, committee work, and other duties as assigned; Willingly shares all information with department teammates in an effort to provide high quality outcomes that contribute to student success; Provide staff coverage during evenings, weekends, and special events as determined by department & function need.
Bachelor's degree in Outdoor Recreation, Recreation, Sport Management, Experiential Education, or related field with 2 years of experience working in adventure/experiential education, with particular emphasis in university recreation and facilitating challenge programs for diverse client groups.
Master's degree in Outdoor Recreation, Recreation, Sport Management, Experiential Education, or a related field with 5 years’ experience working in adventure/experiential education, with emphasis in university recreation and facilitating challenge programs for diverse client groups.
Special or Physical Qualifications:
Proficiency in range of outdoor skills including but not limited to backpacking, rock climbing, paddling, spelunking, and group facilitation. Ability to work flexible hours.
Strong leadership, oral/written communication, organizational, as well as supervisory/training skills are essential for success.
Wilderness First Responder or higher (ability to obtain within 3 months of employment)
ACA Canoeing/Kayaking or higher (ability to obtain within 3 months of employment)
