The Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics Department (PERA) is seeking an individual with experience in working within a community of diverse students and colleagues. Successful candidates will by their teaching, administration, leadership or service demonstrate they can contribute to the diversity and excellence of athletics, the department and our community.
Physical Education Responsibilities: Teach two rock climbing classes in the physical education program (Tues/Thurs from 6-7 p.m. and 7-8 p.m.) spring semester. Be responsible for development of a teaching plan and syllabus for the course. Engage students in skill instruction with a focus on team building activities.
Recreation Responsibilities: Facilitate the Rock Climbing Recreation program 3 – 6 hours a week during Term 3 (end of January – end of March) during the academic year. The Recreation programming includes the supervision of student workers to assist with individual rock climbing participants.
Climbing Wall Facility Management: Awareness of safety concerns and risk management, excellent oral and written communication skills, and supervisory experiences with students, staff, and/or participants. Will be the Wellesley College licensee for the climbing wall which was built in August 2011 by High Five Adventure Learning. Will be responsible for all inspections conducted as per manufacturer’s recommendations and accepted industry practices. Inspections include: Daily Inspections (Informal): Ropes, harnesses, climbing holds, carabiners, belay devices, and climbing wall structures are to be informally inspected by staff and patrons as part of the daily use of the climbing wall and ultimately each piece of equipment used. The informal daily inspections are not recorded unless a problem is discovered. Bi-Weekly Inspections (Formal): Soft goods: Ropes, harnesses, and anchors are formally inspected on a bi-weekly basis. Inspection findings are recorded in the inspection log for each piece of equipment and documented in inspection logs. Monthly (Formal): Hardware: carabiners, belay devices, quick links, and belay lines are formally inspected on a monthly basis. Inspection findings are recorded in the inspection log for each piece of equipment and documented in inspection logs. Bi-Annual (Formal): The overall climbing wall and bouldering arch structures are formally inspected yearly by a certified department of public safety climbing wall inspector. Inspection findings part of licensure.
Start date is January 29, 2018
Salary is $4000 for two PE classes PLUS an hourly rate of $40 for Recreation Climbing and Facility Management responsibilities.
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree required, and 1-3 years of work related experience. PCIA or AMGA Climbing Wall certification preferred. The successful candidate must have a proven record of climbing wall supervision, leadership skills, role modeling, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Valid driver’s license and clearance to drive College vehicles required. CPR/AED/First Aid certification required upon hire.
