Old Dominion University is currently accepting applications for the following five Graduate Assistant positions for the 2018-19 academic year: Fitness & Wellness GA, Group Exercise & Instructional Programs, Marketing & Promotions GA, Outdoor Adventure Challenge Course GA, and Sport Club GA.
The GA positions require an average of 20 hours per week on an established schedule that fits with the student’s course demands. The schedule will include weekdays, weeknights, weekends, and some holidays. A stipend of $10,000 will be paid over the fall and spring semesters. There is a 61% tuition and fees waiver for eligible out-of-state students. A full tuition waiver will be offered for Ph.D. students. Summer employment may be available. The employment contract runs August 10, 2018 through May 9, 2019 and maybe renewed based on performance evaluation. NOTE: Graduate Assistants must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA each semester in graduate level classes.

Fitness & Wellness (1 position) – The Fitness & Wellness GA will assist the Assistant Director for Fitness & Wellness and the Coordinator of Fitness & Wellness with the administration of the Fitness & Wellness programs. General responsibilities include, but are not limited to staff training and evaluation of Fitness Specialists; assist with the Employee Wellness Program; coordinate fitness & wellness programming at the Student Recreation Center and the University Fitness Center; serve as an official representative of the Recreation & Wellness Department; assist with and implement fitness & wellness special events and other duties as assigned. Marketing & Promotions (1 position) – The Marketing & Promotions GA will assist the Assistant Director for Marketing and Membership with the management and execution of marketing and promotional efforts of all programs offered by the Recreation and Wellness department. General responsibilities include, but are not limited to developing a marketing plan to promote, enhance and cultivate interest in the programs, services and facilities offered by Recreation and Wellness. Develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of all departmental policies, guidelines and procedures. Assist in the training, evaluating and hiring of all student staff. Provide assistance with departmental sponsored Special Events; assume the responsibilities of the Assistant Director when he/she is not on duty. Collaborate with all staff members to share gathered information to use for strategic market planning. Goal setting for each program area; update of all electronic content (website, social media platforms). Assist with the planning of marketing needs for upcoming year to determine timelines for promotional campaigns, and publicity distribution. Assist with the development, design, and distribution of promotional material for Recreation and Wellness. Assist with the coordination and promotion of special programs and events within Recreation and Wellness. Identify factors that indicate recruitment and retention of students, faculty and staff through recreation activities-health fairs, resource tables, public speaking, orientation sessions, etc. Assist with the development of short and long-term marketing goals and budget for the department. Compile and maintain the Recreation and Wellness archives including pictures, articles, advertisements, and other materials. Develop relationships with other departments both on and off- campus. Outdoor Adventure Challenge Course (1 position) – The Outdoor Adventure Challenge Course GA will assist the Assistant Director for Outdoor Adventure Programs with the administration of the Challenge Course, and will report to the Director of Outdoor Adventure Programs. General responsibilities include, but are not limited to assist with the development and management of the Challenge Course program. Hire, train, and supervise student employees of the Challenge Course program. Evaluate student employees through verbal and written reports. Assist with the budgeting of student payroll and operational expenses. Assist with the design and implementation of staff trainings for the Challenge Course programs. Assist in the management of group use and special events for the Challenge Course including reservations, meeting with clients to define group goals and objectives for their program, scheduling of staff and implementation of these specialized programs. Serve as a member of the Challenge Course staff for specialized group use. Provide excellent customer service, be courteous and exceed customer expectations. Promote and market Outdoor Adventure Program opportunities to the ODU community. Supervise staff in compiling statistical information of participation in the Challenge Course program and contribute monthly highlights, and participation numbers. Record keeping of Challenge Course participation data. Supervise staff performing equipment inventory, facility maintenance schedules, and make purchasing recommendations to the OAP Director. Serve as a contributing member to the Recreation and Wellness Department. Develop department-wide programming for implementation during challenge-course slow seasons. Sport Clubs (1 position) – The Sport Club GA will assist the Assistant Director for Sport Club Programs with the administration of the Sport Club Program. General responsibilities include, but are not limited to: guide club officers with the overall administration of their respective clubs; develop rules, policies and procedures for the sport club program; assist with budget allocation, risk management, and equipment inventory; assist with the management of club rosters and member eligibility; hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate student Sport Club Managers; assist in securing and coordinating the use of University and non-University facilities for club practices and competition; assist in the supervision of club coaches; and assist with the advisement of the Sport Club Executive Board; assist in presenting leadership development programs for club officers; participate in club conduct hearings; assist with Recreation & Wellness special events and other duties as assigned.
