The Outdoor and Bicycle Programs Intern reports directly to the Assistant Director of Outdoor and Bicycle Programs and will be responsible for assisting in the following areas:
Outdoor Adventure Program 60%
Bike Shop and Bike Share Program 15%
Summer Kayak Center 25%
Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as lead instructor for Outdoor Adventure and Kayak Center programs including: backpacking, rock climbing, kayaking, canoeing, surfing, and/or skiing
Assist in the day to day management and operation of the Summer Kayak Center.
Assist with hiring, training, scheduling, supervision and mentoring of student outdoor and bicycle program staff.
Assist in administrative duties including risk management, web updates, marketing, data entry, record keeping, participation reporting, quality control, inventory, organization, planning and other duties as assigned.
Assist with the day to day management of the Freewheelers Bicycle Share and UMass Lowell Bike Shop.
Previous experience in leading outdoor trips
Familiarity with current trends and practices within the outdoor recreation and higher education fields
Excellent communication, decision making, and ability to relate to a diverse student population
Ability to multitask in a busy and dynamic environment
Has a current driver’s license, a clean driving record and the ability to drive 12 passenger van with trailer
Ability to work a flexible schedule including a significant amount of evenings and weekends
Wilderness First Responder certification preferred.
ACA L2 Kayak Instructor, AMGA or PCIA Single Pitch Instructor
Professional experience in outdoor recreation, guiding, university outdoor program and/or challenge course
Additional Salary Information: $1200 monthly stipend
University housing credit - Apartment style housing provided for the duration of position.
Access to all program equipment and resources
Professional development or conference attendance $1000 stipend
Paid time off approximately 2-3 weeks during holidays and non-peak times, flexible
Target Start Date: May 15, 2018

The Department of Campus Recreation at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Outdoor and Bicycle Programs Intern. This internship is designed to help qualified candidates build focused experience to pursue a career in outdoor and bicycle related university programming. This is a 12-month, 30 hour per week, entry-level position.
