The Coordinator will assist the Assistant Director in managing the daily operations of Auburn Outdoors. Depending upon the qualifications of the Coordinator, they will be directly responsible for two or more of the following areas, the indoor climbing wall, the trip program, the bike shop, or the outdoor rental shop. The Coordinator will aid in overall duties for Auburn Outdoors such as training both technical and soft skills, scheduling, payroll, and accountability of all student staff. This position is expected to attend annual conferences, seminars, and workshops to develop professionally and be exposed to new ideas/ trends in the field.
This is a full-time, 12-month position, exempt, with benefits. Responsibilities include:
Coordinate personnel activities (for students) to include staff scheduling (consisting of approximately 500 hours weekly) operations, pay scales, payroll oversight, and evaluations for a large 50 + student staff.
Create and facilitate curriculum for semesterly and bi-monthly all staff training, including bi-monthly Bike Maintenance Technicians and Climbing Wall Technician trainings.
Schedule, coordinate, procure permitting, and facilitate 10-15 off-campus adventure programs each semester.
Provide PCIA Climbing Wall Instructor Course training each semester.
Assist in managing the regular operations of climbing wall (38 hrs. /wk.) Including route setting operations (20 man hrs. / wk.), approximately 30 climbing wall programs semesterly, and annual Auburn Ascent Climbing Festival (approximately 150 participants).
Assist in managing the regular operation of a 5000 sq. ft. rental center (30 hrs. / wk.) Including maintenance and repair of approximately $300,000 of equipment.
Assist in managing regular operations of the bike shop (30 hrs. / wk.) Consists of maintenance and repair of 36 bicycles and bicycle maintenance instruction to participants.
Develop action plans to attract new participants, and retain participants for the climbing wall, rental center, bike shop, and outdoor adventure trip program.
Research and scout new recreation areas and activities.
The ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends
Master's degree from an accredited institution in Recreation, Recreation Administration, Physical Education, communications, or a related field
Experience in four or more of the following: multi-day backpacking, hiking, caving, whitewater kayaking, rafting, kayak/canoe touring, rock climbing (single pitch), and mountain biking and bikepacking/touring.
Strong background in leading and developing a large student staff
AMGA/PCIA Single Pitch Climbing Instructor or equivalent
PCIA Climbing Wall Instructor Provider
Wilderness First Responder
Extensive technical experience in bicycle maintenance
American Canoe and Kayak Association with Instructor Level Training/Certifications in kayaking, stand up paddle boards, or canoeing
Extensive knowledge of facility management software, such as Innosoft Fusion, staff scheduling software, such as When to Work, and timekeeping software, such as Kronos
Experience with ordering equipment, gear repair, and rental of equipment through software based management systems
Excellent organization, leadership and communication skills, including, but not limited to written, oral and interpersonal skills; and computer literacy
A positive attitude, well-developed teaching abilities, and exceptional customer service skills
Bachelors' degree from an accredited institution in Recreation, Recreation Administration, Physical Education, or a related field. Plus, two (2) years’ experience in recreational programming. The employer will consider advanced degrees in lieu of experience. Knowledge of planning, management, scheduling and oversight of outdoor recreational activities is required. Must have or the ability to obtain CPR and First Aid Certifications within 90 days of employment.
