Overview: As a graduate assistant in the Department of Recreation Services you will be afforded opportunities and experiences in leadership, decision making, and learning opportunities through doing rather than watching. Purpose: All graduate assistant positions with Emporia State University are responsible for the overall execution of their specific program offerings. In addition to their program responsibilities graduate assistants will be active members of the Campus Recreation team; engaging in department committees, functions, and initiatives, program-specific training sessions, and large-scale division and department special events and initiatives. Graduate Assistants will hold regular scheduled office hours, and evening and weekend work is expected. Contracts for graduate assistant positions are renewable on a yearly basis, and are dependent upon favorable academic standing as well as acceptable performance evaluations specific to the role each plays in Recreation Services.
Compensation Information: Tuition waivers are granted to cover nine credits of course work during the fall and spring semesters. Full-time graduate assistants will receive a stipend of approximately $7,344 for the academic year, and an option for summer employment. Subsidized graduate assistant health insurance is available. Graduate student is responsible for paying his/her own fees. Professional development assistance is available. We offer stipends for travel, which must include presentations at state, regional, and national conferences. Application deadline: February 5, 2018 or until filled.

Graduate Assistant Facilities and Student Development: The Graduate Assistant-Facility Operations/Student Development is responsible for the overall development & supervision of the student staff, as well as the supervision and operations of Recreation Services facilities. This person will have leadership and supervisory responsibilities primarily of the Student Recreation Center which may include mornings, evenings, and weekends. Candidates must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; provide positive leadership, and the ability to multi-task.
Duties and Responsibilities: • Directly oversee approximately 15 front desk employees, 6 lifeguards, & 10 practicum students. This will include staff and program supervision; hiring, training, and evaluation; in-service training and facility inspections; special event programming; membership sales; risk management and policy development • Create and maintain staff schedules for the facility & lifeguard staff and assume responsibility for filling in when necessary • Coordinate all building & pool communication – schedules, calendar and fliers regarding pool hours, closures, etc. • Manage both staff recognition and discipline • Conduct monthly staff meetings and in-services • Coordinate and host on-going student development work-shops • Assist with the managing and maintaining of Recreation Services policies and procedures • Coordinate all fitness center maintenance including preventative, safety checks, and out of order issues • Monitor, log and submit work order for repairs to facilities and equipment • Manage and maintaining our Borrow a Bike Program • Compile usage reports of facilities • Create, organize, market, and implement Recreation Services events and activities • Provide professional staff leadership and supervisory responsibilities that will include mornings, evenings, and weekends • Support high-profile special event programs. These programs will include the Nitty Gritty Tye-Dye Run and Nitty Gritty Dirt Dash • Complete other duties as assigned by Recreation Services leadership staff
Graduate Assistant Health and Fitness Education: The Graduate Assistant for Health & Fitness is primarily responsible for the hiring, training, supervision, evaluation of health & fitness employees, risk management, as well as the development, assessment, management, and marketing of health & fitness programs and events. This position is also a contributing member of the overall operation to successfully deliver on a wide-range of Recreation Services programming.
Duties & Responsibilities: • Recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, scheduling, and performance evaluation of health & fitness staff • The development, implementation, and evaluation of Recreation Services health & fitness programs • Provide continuing educational components to health & fitness staff through program in-services • Instruct instructional training courses for Personal Training and Group Fitness positions • Track and record department data to be used for statistical analysis • Assist in programming monthly wellness special events such as Women & Weights & Healthy Hornet Challenge • Attend monthly Healthy Hornet Wellness committee meetings • Instruct a minimum of one group fitness class each block during the academic year • Assist in the overall development of all fitness student workers
