The Assistant Director for Fitness and Wellness is responsible for the direction, planning, organization, supervision and evaluation of the Fitness and Wellness program within the Department of Campus Recreation. The primary purpose of this position is to develop, direct and administer services that involve direct interaction with students and enhance their academic and learning experiences outside of the classroom setting. The position provides leadership, oversight and empowers professional and student staff to develop and foster fitness/wellness programs that promote student learning, development and success. The Assistant Director directs and manages a comprehensive fitness/wellness program, including fitness staff training, group fitness, personal/small group training, fitness assessments/screenings and fitness outreach that provide diverse and intentional recreation opportunities in a safe, inclusive and accessible environment. The Assistant Director for Fitness and Wellness mentors and directly supervises a full-time Fitness Coordinator. The position reports to the Senior Associate Director for Business Operations and Strategic Planning.
At least five years of full-time professional experience in a collegiate or corporate setting in the administration of fitness/wellness programming, group fitness instruction and personal training (two years of Graduate Assistant experience equivalent to one year of professional experience).
Current certification in at least one of the following areas ACSM Health Fitness Instructor, ACE Exercise Leader and/or Personal Trainer, AFAA Group Exercise Instructor, and/or CSCS/NASM certification and have current CPR, AED and First Aid
Ability to teach multiple group fitness class formats
Ability to organize and administer group fitness instructor/personal training preparation
Must possess strong interpersonal skills, proven written and organization skills, and the ability to handle multiple tasks.
License or Certification Required
Current group fitness instructor certification from American Council of Exercise (ACE) or Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) or National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) or American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Health Fitness Instructor or National Strength and Conditioning association (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist
Nationally recognized personal training or strength and conditioning specialist certification from American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), National Academy of Sports Medicine, American Council of Exercise (ACE) or Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA).
Master's degree in Exercise Science, Physiology, Kinesiology, or related field.
