The University of Houston, Department of Campus Recreation seeks an energetic and passionate professional to join our dynamic team of recreational leaders. The Assistant Director is responsible for the day to day operation and staff supervision of a comprehensive Fitness program that consists of Group Fitness, Personal Training, Small Group Training, Fitness Zone , Fitness Assessments, Fit for Hire, and ACE Instructor and Trainer Courses. The Assistant Director will be responsible for development, long-range planning and assessment, budget, risk management, and maintaining accurate records of participation. This position reports to the Associate Director of Campus Recreation for Programs and Assessment.
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Directs the recruitment, selection, supervision, and evaluation of staff and students; provides guidance, and is responsible for professional development and training for staff.
Provides leadership and direction for fitness programs, schedules and evaluates fitness programs including group fitness classes, personal and group personal training, Fit4Hire, instructor training, non-academic ACE Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor classes, special programs and events.
Provide supervision of the Coordinator of Fitness and assist with the supervision of the Graduate Assistant.
Collaborates with marketing team to develop and execute an ongoing marketing and promotional plan for all programs.
Oversees the scheduling, supervision, and management of fitness programs for multiple activities within and outside of the CRWC.
Ensures program compliance with university policies and procedures, and local and state regulations.
Monitor expenses and revenue goals, identify opportunities for fundraising, sponsorship and grants to support programs and events.
Develop, plan, and implement long range strategic plans for assessment of student development, learning outcomes, evaluations of programs, services and staff.
Maintains records and creates various reports including semi-annual and annual reports.
Collaborates with campus partners and academic units to develop and implement programs and events that contribute to student success
Assess, evaluate and mitigate risk for programs, implement departmental emergency action plan, inspect campus program areas and equipment.
Performs other job-related duties as required.
Experience: Minimum requirements include 3-years of directly related experience with technical and instructional proficiency in a number of pursuits including but not limited to: teaching a wide variety of group exercise classes, small group training, and employee management software, emergency response, purchasing, group dynamics, and student leadership based topics, facility and equipment inspection, purchasing and maintenance of equipment. Proficiency in team building concepts, program design, supervision and training program staff, student development theory and application, fiscal management, program development. The ideal applicant will have a minimum of 5- years of directly related progressive experience in a university setting, including supervision of full-time staff.
Applicants should demonstrate ability to lead and manage a coordinator, graduate, undergraduate student staff, interns and volunteers. Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as demonstrated leadership ability are also desirable.
Skills or Certifications: Must have valid Personal Training certification and Group Fitness Instructor certification through ACE, ACSM, NSCA, or NASM, or a nationally accredited organization; Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) and First Aid certifications; and must obtain CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor certification within first year of employment.
Education: A Bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology, Health Education, Physical Education, Sports Management, Recreation or related field. Master's degree is preferred.
Salary: Commensurate with experience ($46,572- $60,564)
