Assistant Director – Recreational Sports (Fitness and Wellness Programs)
Definition and Purpose
Under the direct supervision of the Director – Recreational Sports, the Assistant Director – Fitness and Wellness is responsible for the coordination and management of the ASI Recreational Sports fitness, personal training, and wellness programs.
Additionally, all ASI employees are responsible for upholding the core values of the organization including but not limited to exhibiting professional behavior, acting as a role model to others, displaying a positive and cooperative attitude, communicating effectively, developing expert knowledge in area of specialization, and working together as a team.
Working knowledge of correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Directly supervise Assistant Coordinator – Fitness Programs, Graduate Assistant-Wellness, and Personal Training staff.
Directly supervise 2-3 professional coordinator staff in areas such as aquatics/safety, intramural sports, fitness/wellness, outdoor education, and/or membership services.
Oversee supervision of ASI Fitness Instructors and contracted service providers.
Supervise and support the ASI Recreational Sports staff.
Facilitate meetings, conduct performance evaluations, establish goals, and monitor day-to-day operations of recreational sports programming.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Participate in the development of program-wide student staff selection strategy.
Develop and conduct all program specific meetings, retreats, and workshops for staff training and development.
Work directly with professional and student staff to best serve Cal Poly students and the campus community members.
Assist in development, preparation and monitoring of budget processes.
Conduct research to maintain progressive and innovative systems as they relate to fitness and wellness programming and student development.
Ensure compliance with all ASI, University, State, and Federal policies/statutes.
Periodically provide first aid and CPR training to ASI staff.
Oversee programming for the areas of fitness and wellness for the ASI Recreational Sports department.
Oversee the operations of four fitness studios and 21,000 sq. ft. of exercise room spaces.
Develop, conduct and assess educational workshops related to fitness and wellness.
Evaluate trends and assist with implementing proper group and instructional related fitness classes.
Research and recommend proper layouts and trends of exercise room equipment.
Develop, produce, and evaluate student recreational activities and programs for areas such as, fitness, intramurals, aquatics, outdoor education, membership, and safety.
Advise student leaders, employees, and organization on all programming matters.
Support the promotion of other ASI, Student Service, recreation, fitness, wellness, and activities on campus as appropriate.
Leadership and Student Development
Assist with the implementation of leadership seminars, trainings, workshops for the Student Manager Leadership Team within ASI Programs.
Develop, conduct and assess student staff training and development programs for areas of responsibility.
Motivate and guide both professional and student staff leaders in constructive and productive activities aligned with organizational goals.
Identify and collaborate with appropriate campus departments and clubs to promote recreational, fitness, and wellness programs.
Develop and execute assessment of programs and/or services for areas of responsibility including, but not limited to, setting and implementing goals, evaluating outcomes, and ongoing program enhancement.
Participate in the overall ASI assessment planning and goal setting.
NOTE: Some assignment areas for Assistant Directors are fluid and periodically reviewed and revised based on program philosophy, professional development, and staff needs.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Represent ASI on committees as appropriate.
Attend and participate in meetings as necessary.
Ensure continuous professional development.

Annual Salary: $70,775.00

Educational and Qualifying Experience, Skills, Licenses, Credentials
Degree in Kinesiology or related field
Master's degree preferred (4 years applicable experience may be substituted for educational requirement).
Current American Red Cross certification in the following: Adult CPR, AED, and First Aid.
Professional Personal Training Certification (ACSM, or equivalent)
Must hold a CA Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
Minimum four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position, preferably in a college or university setting.
Minimum three (3) years’ experience coordinating recreation programs for students, related to areas such as fitness, wellness, intramurals, aquatics, outdoor education, informal recreation, etc.
Experience in budgeting and fiscal management.
Supervisory experience required.
