Responsible for the planning, organizing, directing, and controlling of the daily operations and personnel of the Sam Houston State University Recreational Sports Fitness Program.

Organizes, develops, and manages the fitness program, with the support of staff and student personnel. Formulates and recommends policy, procedural, and rule changes. Interprets policies within the scope of fitness programs and facilities. Interviews, hires, trains, schedules, and evaluates student and support personnel. Compiles budgetary information relative to program area. Makes equipment, program and staffing decisions and recommendations. Works directly with student groups, organizations, departments, alumni, government officials, vendors, and others as necessary. Prepares reports, analysis, evaluations, and proposals as required. Promotes specific activities and coordinates publicity for the fitness program. Serves on committees as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned.

National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA)certification desirable. First Aid and CPR certifications preferred. Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed. Group exercise or personal training certifications in ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NASM/CSCS, NSCA, Cooper, NDEITA/NETA, or other national level certification strongly preferred. Must possess well developed communicative and interpersonal skills essential to working with large and small groups. Working hours may vary as required including evening and week?end work. Position may require driving and operating a university vehicle, therefore, a valid Texas driver license and driving record acceptable to the university’s insurance carrier is required. Requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Recreation Sports Administration, Student Personnel Services, or closely related field. Minimum of two years full time paid experience in a professional, supervisory capacity of a recreation oriented program. Experience with campus recreation would be helpful. Or a combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities.
