NC State University is seeking an energetic, innovative, student-centered leader for the position of Assistant Director, Fitness. We seek an individual with proven leadership experience capable of working in a fast-paced, results-oriented team. The candidate will empower student and professional staff to create world-class recreation programs, services and facilities that promote and enhance student success inside and outside of the classroom. This position reports to the Associate Director, University Recreation.
The Assistant Director, Fitness will provide visionary leadership and manage an innovative and comprehensive collegiate fitness program that includes strength and conditioning facilities, group fitness, personal training, fitness assessments, and fitness special events. Candidate will ensure all fitness programs and equipment operate within required risk management procedures and oversee the implementation of safety standards.
Specific responsibilities include:
Provide overall leadership and direction for the collegiate recreation fitness program that includes strength and conditioning facilities, group fitness, personal training, fitness assessments, and fitness special events.
Collaborate on University wellness initiatives that include but not limited to Exercise is Medicine®, Partnership for a Healthier America – Healthier Campus Initiative, lifestyle and weight management programs.
Serve as primary fitness expert for the $45 million, 82,000 sq. ft. Carmichael Addition and Renovation project currently in design and expected to open fall 2020.
Supervise two full-time staff members; indirectly supervise approximately 100 student staff. Ensure staff provides the highest level of customer service for students and members.
Oversee group fitness and personal training programs by implementing goals, expectations and procedures for programs, equipment, and service management.
Oversee the daily operation of more than 35,000 sq. ft. of strength and conditioning facility spaces. Responsible for fitness equipment purchasing and fitness center management.
Develop, coordinate and execute fitness staff training opportunities for group fitness instructors, personal trainers, fitness assistants, strength and conditioning assistants and program assistants with a focus on student development, training, and learning.
Serve as fitness liaison to campus partners that include but not limited to Student Health Services, Counseling Center and University Housing to develop collaborative programs that support student success.
Responsible for specific and direct fiscal management of fitness program.
Lead the assessment and evaluation efforts for the fitness program each semester identifying participation levels, program participant interests, learning and development objectives. Develop recommendations and implement new classes, programs, and activities.
Assist as needed in all required departmental functions.
Master’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, health promotion, recreation or a related field.
Two years of full-time experience leading fitness programming planning.
Two years of full-time experience managing strength and conditioning facilities.
Ability to teach multiple group fitness class formats.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, TRAINING/EDUCATION
Four years of full-time experience leading fitness programming.
Current American Red Cross CPR, AED and first aid.
Experience managing full-time staff.

REQUIRED LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION
Current group fitness instructor certification from American Council of Exercise (ACE) or Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) or National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), or American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Health Fitness Instructor or National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.
Nationally recognized personal training or strength and conditioning specialist certification from American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), National Academy of Sports Medicine, American Council of Exercise (ACE) or Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA).
