Summary Job Function: The Graduate Assistant for Competitive Sports will be primarily responsible for interacting with student employees, Campus Recreation participants, and sport club organizations at FAU as well as other projects assigned by the Assistant Director for Competitive Sports. This position requires an individual who possesses leadership qualities and is organized, energetic, and creative, with prior experience in Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs.
Learning Outcomes: Through employment as a Graduate Assistant for Competitive Sports with FAU Campus Recreation, an individual will:
Learn the facets of program planning, management, delivery, and assessment
Obtain first-hand experience in supervising students while facilitating student learning
Acquire knowledge of budget construction and management
Establish an understanding of the Campus Recreation and other Student Affairs professions
Duties and Responsibilities: The Graduate Assistant for Competitive Sports will assist in directing the day to day operations of a comprehensive Intramural and Sport Club program. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Assist with providing direct supervision and administration of assigned intramural sports
Assist the program with promotion, hiring/training personnel, scheduling, supervision, and evaluation of sport programs and student employees
Support and encourage the concept of student leadership and development
Provide guidance and consultation for sport club organizations
Develop and lead Intramural and Sport Club trainings/in-services
Evaluate student staff on site during Intramural contests
Hold office hours to assist staff and patrons with questions and concerns
Assist with disciplinary meetings/hearings
Track/ maintain inventory and assist in yearly purchasing
Assist with departmental and division-wide special events
Some evening and weekend responsibilities
Other opportunities available through interaction with a comprehensive recreational sports program and by serving on departmental and university committees
Perform other duties and projects as assigned by the Assistant or Associate Director of Campus Recreation
In-state tuition waivers are granted to cover nine (9) credits of coursework during the fall, spring, and summer semesters
$12.83 per hour and 20 paid hour work weeks
Employment will only be granted upon acceptance to the Florida Atlantic University Educational Leadership Master’s Program
Student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00 based on degree requirements
Student is responsible for additional fees not covered by in-state tuition waiver
Two year position comprised of two one-year renewable contracts
Anticipated Start Date: August 2017
Anticipated End Date: May 2019
Qualifications for the position:
Experience working with intramural and/or sport clubs in a recreational sports setting
Acceptance into Florida Atlantic University Educational Leadership Master’s Degree
Ability to work well independently and collaboratively as part of a team
Effective written and verbal communication skills
