Old Dominion University is currently accepting applications for 4 Graduate Assistant positions for the 2017-18 academic year. We are seeking 1 Facilities GA, 1 Intramural & Extramural GA, 1 Outdoor Adventure Trips Program & Special Events GA, and 1 Outdoor Adventure Climbing Trips Program & Challenge Course GA.
The GA positions require an average of 20 hours per week on an established schedule that fits with the student’s course demands. The schedule will include weekdays, weeknights, weekends, and some holidays. A stipend of $10,000 will be paid over the fall and spring semesters. There is a 61% tuition and fees waiver for eligible out-of-state students. A full tuition waiver will be offered for Ph.D. students. Summer employment may be available. The employment contract runs August 10, 2017 through May 9, 2018 and maybe renewed based on performance evaluation.

Facility Operations (1 position) – The Facility Operations GA will assist the Associate Director of Operations and the Assistant Director of Facility & Event Operations with administrative responsibilities pertaining to the operations of the Student Recreation Center. Specific responsibilities will include, but not limited to: Serve as an official representative of the Recreation & Wellness Department during duty hours; recruit, hire, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate student employees; coordinate Informal Recreation inventory control process; provide facility and event supervision; oversee safety, security, and risk management issues for facilities and events; develop and manage policies and procedures for facilities; and assist with Recreation & Wellness special events and other duties as assigned

Intramural & Extramural Sports (1 position) – The Intramural & Extramural Sports GA will assist the Assistant Director for Intramural and Extramural Sports with the administration of the Intramural & Extramural programs. Specific responsibilities include recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate student intramural managers and officials; produce league schedules, tournament brackets, singles/dual events and meet sport schedules; conduct clinics and workshops on rules, playing techniques, officiating procedures, and intramural sports policies; maintain accurate statistical records related to participation, budget, and equipment inventory.; participate in disciplinary hearings for student employees and participants; assume the responsibilities of the Assistant Director in his/her absence; and assist with Recreation & Wellness special events and other duties as assigned. Outdoor Adventure Program – Adventure Trips Program and Special Events (1 position) – The OAP Adventure Trips & Special Events GA will assist with the development and management of the Trip program and multiple special events. Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: hire, train, and supervise student employees including, the Adventure Trip Manager, and Trip Leaders. Assist with the design and implementation of staff trainings for the Outdoor Adventure Center and Trip Leader programs including a semester long training for Apprentice Trip Leaders. Assist in the development of the semester Trip schedule including trip destinations/activities, budget design, staffing, marketing, and assessment. Plan and lead Trips during the semester and some holiday breaks as needed. Evaluate student employees through verbal and written reports. Assist with the budgeting of student payroll and operational expenses. Promote and market the Outdoor Adventure Program to the ODU community. Supervise staff compiling statistical information of participation in Trip program and the Outdoor Adventure Center and contribute monthly highlights. Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness First Aid, experience in multiple outdoor recreation activities, ACA, or LNT Certifications, trip leading, guiding, and trip leader training experience preferred. Supervise staff performing equipment inventory and make purchasing recommendations to the Assistant Director. Assist with Recreational Sports special events and other duties as assigned. Outdoor Adventure Program – Climbing Trips Program and Challenge Course (1 position) – The OAP Climbing Trips Program and Challenge Course GA will assist the Assistant Director of the Outdoor Adventure Program with the administration of the Climbing Adventure Program and Challenge Course program. Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: hire, train, and supervise student employees for the Climbing Wall, Climbing Adventure Trips and Challenge Course programs; evaluate student employees through verbal and written reports; assist with the budgeting of student payroll and operational expenses; assist with the design and implementation of staff trainings for the Climbing Wall and Challenge Course programs; assist in the management of group use and special events for the Climbing Wall and Challenge Course including reservations, meeting with clients to define group goals and objectives for their program, scheduling of staff and implementation of these specialized programs. Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness First Aid, experience in multiple outdoor recreation activities and bicycle maintenance, AMGA, PCIA Certifications, climbing wall management and challenge course facilitation experience.
Serve as a member of the Climbing Wall and Challenge Course staff including regular hours of operation and for specialized group use; assist in the planning and leading of extended trips over holiday breaks as needed; provide excellent customer service; be courteous and exceed customer expectations; co-lead outdoor climbing trips with student trip leaders; promote and market Outdoor Adventure Program opportunities to the ODU community; supervise staff compiling statistical information of participation in the Climbing Wall and Challenge Course programs and contribute monthly highlights; supervise staff performing equipment inventory, facility maintenance schedules, and make purchasing recommendations to the Assistant Director; assist with Recreation and Wellness special events and other duties as assigned.
