NC State University is seeking an energetic, innovative, student-centered leader for the position of Coordinator, Aquatics. We seek an individual with proven leadership experience capable of working in a fast-paced, results-oriented team. The candidate will empower student and professional staff to create world-class recreation programs, services and facilities that promote and enhance student success inside and outside of the classroom. This position reports to the Assistant Director, Aquatics.
The candidate will provide leadership and manage the day-to-day operation of NC State University Recreation aquatic facilities with an emphasis on providing a safe, well-maintained and proficiently staffed environment. This position will provide significant instruction and development of students and manage instructional aquatic programs, risk management, schedules, event management, and equipment maintenance.
Specific responsibilities include:
Provide leadership and manage the day-to-day operation of NC State University recreation aquatic facilities. The Carmichael Aquatic Center includes a 25 yard pool and dive well and a 50 meter competition pool. The aquatic center is part of the Carmichael Complex which is an is an approximately 350,000 sq. ft. recreation and fitness facility that includes: multiple fitness centers, locker rooms, 11 hardwood basketball/activity courts, racquetball courts, climbing wall, sauna, steam room, equipment checkout desk, multiple performance studios (group fitness, dance, etc.), golf practice facility, classrooms, several meeting/conference rooms, and indoor running track.
Communicate expectations, policies and guidelines of appropriate use of facilities. Recommend improvements to policies and guidelines as needed.
Resolve conflicts that occur in facilities. Specific examples include user non-compliance of facility and department policies and guidelines, illegal access of facilities, inappropriate behavior, etc.
Maintain aquatics equipment and informal recreation swim equipment.
Ensure all aquatic facilities operate within required risk management procedures and oversee the implementation of standardized safety practices. Oversee compliance with NC State University and applicable national standards and regulations.
Supervise approximately 50 facility student staff that includes: lifeguards, supervisors, swim instructors, and program assistants, with a focus on student training, development and learning. Staff is responsible for operational procedures, emergency actions plans, maintaining a safe environment/risk management and providing quality customer service to all students and members. Facilities operate approximately 120 hours per week, seven day per week and have 4,000 – 9,000 visitors daily.
Provide instruction and development opportunities for staff through training, coaching, and performance evaluations that incorporate student learning outcomes. Specific outcomes include critical thinking, creative thinking, problem solving, quality customer service, conflict resolution, initiative, communication, innovation, and other transferable skills related to the department work integrated learning program. Ensure high level of integrity, teamwork, communication, and initiative of all staff. Successful outcomes are achieved through coaching, consistent feedback, and regular performance evaluations.
Coordinate student staff in-service trainings specific to emergency, accident and incident protocols. Make changes to emergency action plan as needed. Track and maintain relevant certifications for staff.
Identify strategies for facility operations to be more efficient and effective through technology and other processes and systems.
Assist with the development and execution of assessment programs for facility operations. Participate in overall department assessment and goal planning.
Responsible for managing time cards and bi-weekly payroll for staff.
Assist as needed in all required departmental functions.
Bachelor’s degree; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, TRAINING/EDUCATION
Master’s degree in recreation, sports management, student affairs, higher education administration or other related field. If in progress, must be completed by date of hire.
Successful professional, internship or graduate assistantship experience in aquatics management.
One year of successful professional experience in aquatics facility management.
REQUIRED LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION
Lifeguard Instructor (LGI)
First Aid/CPR Instructor
Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or the ability to obtain within six months of employment
Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or the ability to obtain within six months of employment
