Virginia Tech Recreational Sports is excited to recruit energetic applicants for the Assistant Director for Fitness Programs position. Position Summary: Provides management and leadership to the Fitness Programs which include group exercise, personal training & fitness testing, small group training, instructional dance, strength & conditioning, instructional gymnastics, and assigned special events. Supervises all fitness programming staff, which includes 1 full-time staff, 1 graduate assistant and over 150 student part-time student and wage staff. Leads fitness initiatives and collaborations across the department and campus including but not limited to Sport Clubs, Venture Out, Facilities, and the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise. This position serves as an advocate for fitness and wellness within the university community and the continual pursuit of Building Healthy Hokies. Position is an integral part of the department leadership team, collaborating with fellow Assistant Directors and senior leadership to advance student development and recreational programming while adhering to departmental core values
Administrative & Management Duties - 25%
Develop a comprehensive fitness program to effectively meet the needs and expectations of the Virginia Tech community by providing structured activities, programs, and events that enhance physical and mental performance, increase self-understanding, and foster adherence to long-term healthy lifestyle choices. Supervise the planning, execution, and evaluation of the ACE Personal Training, ACE Group Fitness Instructor, and Lifetime Activities academic courses. Collaborate with Associate Director for Administrative Services to develop annual assessment plan to evaluate student-learning outcomes and customer experience. Evaluate all aspects of the fitness program’s effectiveness and maintain all necessary participation reports for departmental annual report. Pursue continuing education and knowledge of fitness industry trends to deliver a world class fitness experience.
Supervision - 20%
Mentor, supervise, and evaluate full-time Fitness Coordinator. Indirectly supervise one graduate assistant, five student supervisors, and over 150 part-time student and wage employees that include personal trainers, group exercise instructors, small group training coaches, dance instructors, gymnastics instructors, fitness assistants, strength & conditioning coaches/specialists, and interns/field study students. Develop and support continuing education and leadership opportunities. Maintain knowledge of latest research-based group fitness instruction and personal training methodology.
Budget Development - 20%
Develop, submit, present, defend, and administer fitness program operation, wage, and revenue budgets. Manage, purchase, and maintain inventory of all fitness program equipment, supplies, apparel, and computer hardware/software. Meet annual revenue lines. Maintain daily fiscal accountability for fitness program budget.
Program Development Duties - 15%
Strategically plan and organize all fitness program activities including registration and scheduling of group exercise, personal training & fitness testing, small group training, instructional dance, strength & conditioning, instructional gymnastics, and assigned special events. Collaborate with other departmental staff to develop integrated programs promoting physical activity.
Marketing & Promotional Duties - 10%
Develop, coordinate, and manage fitness programs marketing plan in conjunction with the Assistant Director for Marketing and Communications. Implement promotions, campaigns, and initiatives to promote engagement in physical activity. Develop a network with constituents across the department, division, campus, and community to market the fitness programs.
Other Responsibilities - 10%
Represent the department and the division as a member of the Recreational Sports staff on various teams, committees, and task forces through the participation in, and presentation of, professional development programs/workshops. Demonstrate a commitment to teamwork, customer service, and continuous individual and departmental improvement. Consult with the Associate Director for Programs as well as the Fitness Coordinator on appropriate administrative, programmatic, budgetary, and policy matters. Maintain involvement in appropriate professional organizations. Perform other duties as assigned by senior leadership.
