The Department of Recreation Services is seeking an Assistant Manager Custodial Services who will provide leadership to the custodial services in all Recreation Services facilities. The Assistant Manager Custodial Services will use contemporary management techniques to lead the custodial team and will coordinate the needs of the department to achieve a Recreation Services facility environment that is clean and sanitary while meeting the appearance requirements of the recreation community. This position is responsible for the personnel management of the custodial staff group, and student staff, which includes: hiring staff; developing and maintaining training programs; oversight of and direct involvement in conducting performance appraisals for staff; providing discipline as needed to maintain workplace standards; and inspection of work quality. The position will communicate with students and staff within the department, other offices within the University, and vendors and contractors concerning building services, issues, objectives, and needs. The position will be responsible for direct supervision of 10-12 merit custodians and 30 student staff.
The successful candidate will possess strong and efficient written and oral communication skills to communicate and provide complex information to an audience unfamiliar with facility policies and procedures; the ability to think strategically and analytically in order to formulate, implement, and evaluate innovative approaches, creative solutions, and new systems and procedures to meet organizational objectives; the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing team-based environment; capacity to manage/coordinate personnel including mediating among several staff sub-groups to create one focused team effort demonstrated initiative, proven leadership ability, goal setting and project management skills, and capacity to promote excellent interpersonal relationships and collaboratively work with diverse groups of students, staff, faculty, administrators, and community leaders to achieve department goals. The ability to manage, motivate, and evaluate staff, as well as collaborate with staff, is essential. Excellent organization, decision-making, problem-solving, counseling, time management, and project management skills along with a strong commitment to customer service will be necessary for success in this position to efficiently and effectively manage a broad array of work assignments. All staff members are expected to interact collegially and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethics. This incumbent must be willing to work early mornings, late evenings, weekend hours and extended hours as necessary throughout the year.
Custodial services experience in a large organization or institutional environment and in a team environment.
Supervisory experience of large work groups and multiple crews.
Supervisory experience of custodial services and union staff.
Custodial services experience utilizing green and sustainable processes.
Experience in facilitating or presenting training courses or facilities/custodial training workshops.
Telecommuting is allowed.
