Virginia Tech Recreational Sports is excited to recruit energetic applicants for the Assistant Director for Venture Out position. Position Summary: Provides management and leadership to the university’s outdoor recreation programs which include a rental & retail center, team building program, resource area, trips and adventure program, and anticipated newly constructed challenge course. Supervises all outdoor/adventure recreation staff, which includes 1 part-time Venture Out Coordinator, and over 20 program leads and assistants. This position will implement and promote a newly constructed challenge course that will include low ropes, an adventure course, and a zip line. Lead outdoor recreation initiatives and collaborations across the department, campus, and the community. Position is an integral part of the department leadership team, collaborating with fellow Assistant Directors and senior leadership to advance student development and recreational programming while adhering to departmental core values.
Administrative and Management Duties - 25%
Develop and manage a comprehensive outdoor recreation program to effectively meet the needs and expectations of the Virginia Tech and surrounding communities by providing structured activities, trips, programs, and events that are safe, exciting, and high quality. Collaborate with Associate Director for Administrative Services to develop annual assessment plan to evaluate student-learning outcomes and customer experience. Evaluate all aspects of the Venture Out program's effectiveness and maintain all necessary participation reports for department annual report. Pursue continuing education of outdoor recreation and experiential learning practices to deliver a world class experience.
Supervision - 20%
Mentor, supervise, and evaluate part-time Venture Out Coordinator. Provide leadership and supervision to over 20 program leads and assistants that include student supervisors, office and sales assistants, trip leads, and challenge course facilitators. Ensures all staff maintain PCI compliance and current with cash-handling procedures and plans.
Budget Development - 20%
Develop, submit, present, defend, and administer all Venture Out operation, wage, and revenue budgets. Manage, purchase, and maintain inventory of all Venture Out equipment, supplies, apparel, and computer hardware/software. Maintain and restock inventory for sales and rental center. Meet annual revenue lines. Develop new revenue streams by introducing new trips, programs, and services. Maintain daily fiscal accountability for Venture Out budget.
Program Development Duties - 15%
Strategic plan and organize all Venture Out activities including registration and scheduling of trips, challenge course programs, presentations, initiatives and campaigns, and the sales and rental center. Collaborate with other department staff to develop integrated programs to promote outdoor recreation.
Marketing and Promotional Duties - 10%
Develop, coordinate, and manage Venture Out marketing plan in conjunction with the Assistant Director for Marketing and Communications. Implement promotions, campaigns, and initiatives to promote engagement in outdoor recreation programs and services. Develop a network with constituents across the department, division, campus, and community to market the Venture Out program.
Other Responsibilities – 10%
Represent the department and the division as a member of the Recreational Sports staff on various teams, committees, and taskforces through the participation in, and presentation of, professional development programs/workshops. Demonstrate a commitment to teamwork, customer service, and continuous individual and departmental improvement. Consult with the Associate Director for Programs on appropriate administrative, programmatic, budgetary, and policy matters. Maintain involvement in appropriate professional organizations. Perform other duties as assigned by senior leadership.
