Be apart of MSU Outdoor Programs; by helping to implement key outdoor recreation programming; Managing rental/bike shop, training student employees and ordering & repair/maintenance of equipment. This program has it all; trips, equipment rentals, wilderness orientations, rock climbing, raft trips and campus-based events, lectures and presentations.
Recreational Sports & Fitness facilitates the programs and services. Reporting to the Recreation Manager for Outdoor Programs, the Recreation Coordinator III for Outdoor Recreation is responsible for contributing to the development, implementation and direction of key outdoor recreation programming areas within the Department of Recreational Sports and Fitness including serving as the primary medical and safety training supervisor, with oversight of safety and risk management operations and training programming; The person in this position actively participates in the development, implementation and oversight of the Equipment Rental Program and Bike Shop.
Other main responsibilities include but are not limited to supervising approximately 10-15 student and part-time employees; 10-20 volunteers; managing budgets; developing and maintaining facility spaces; developing and implementing staff training program; developing and reviewing policies and procedures to facilitate accountability and manage risks; oversight of federal lands permits, including planning and reporting institutional use; purchasing program supplies and equipment; advertising and marketing program offerings; and managing the department’s vehicle fleet. As a part of the department’s leadership team the person in this position mentors other staff and students as well as acts as a department liaison with university units and community groups.
Duties and Responsibilities
Coordinate with the Recreation Manager for Outdoor Recreation scheduling and monitoring outdoor recreation trips and activities each semester (approximately 120 per year/45-60 per semester).
Work closely with the Recreation Manager of Outdoor Recreation on a comprehensive risk management and training program, ensuring adherence to industry-standard safety protocols for applicable outdoor activities.
Support the Recreation Manager of Outdoor programs in development and management of associated budgets including payroll, generated revenue and student activity fee funds.
Effectively supervise full-time, temporary, graduate assistants, and student staff including hiring, establishing job performance standards, evaluating job performance, taking corrective action, training, assigning and scheduling work, and acting upon leave requests.
Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management, Business Management Sports Management, Leisure Studies or related field or an equivalent combination of relevant work experience and education.
Field experience related to outdoor programs in university or similar setting.
Experience with personnel management , leadership development and training.
Experience managing and supervising student employees and working with college students in a variety of settings.
Experience purchasing and managing Outdoor equipment.
Wilderness First Responder Certification or the ability to get it within 3 months of hire.
Master’s degree in Recreation Management, Business Management Sports Management, Leisure Studies or related field
Two years applicable supervisory work experience.
Professional Outdoor Organizational experience outside of university.
Rock climbing instructor training (AMGA or PCIA).
Wilderness medicine instructor.
AARIE Level 1 or equivalent Avalanche Education
ACA Instructor in one or more of the following disciplines; White Water Rafting, White Water Kayaking, Swift water Rescue.
Special Requirements/Additional Information
Current memberships and/or affiliations with one or more of the following professional organizations: AORE, NIRSA, ACCT, Leave No Trace, CWA, AMGA, PCIA, ACA.
Nationally recognized certification such as Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician, Wilderness First Responder, ACA, LNT, and/or AAA, AIARE or AAI Avalanche certification.
Must possess a valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and meet all State of Montana requirements to operate State/University vehicles. (If successful candidate possesses a valid out-of-state driver’s license, must obtain a valid Montana driver’s license within 60 days of start date.)
Must successfully complete Defensive Driving /Van Safety course within 60 days of start date.
