INSTITUTION/DEPARTMENT: The University of Houston is a Division I college with over 42,000 undergraduate and post graduate students enrolled. The aquatic facilities recently went through an $8.6 million dollar renovation and include a natatorium complete with competition pool, indoor spa and dry sauna; and outdoor leisure pool featuring waterfalls, slide, outdoor spa and sand volleyball. The 70-meter indoor competition pool contains three fiberglass bulkheads allowing for unique set-up opportunities for competitions and recreation. The natatorium is home to the UH varsity Swim and Dive program, as well as partners with several local organizations.
JOB DESCRIPTION: The Aquatic Coordinator – Training and Development is responsible for the recruitment and hiring of staff and oversees the training and development initiatives for all aquatic staff including lifeguards, head lifeguards, instructors for all American Red Cross (ARC) lifeguard and health & safety classes. Additional responsibilities include assisting with facility operations and maintenance and large scale events. Evening and weekend hours required. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to: • Assists with the recruitment, training, supervision, evaluation, and scheduling of lifeguards, head lifeguards, and American Red Cross lifeguard and health and safety instructors. • Develop and implement onboarding requirements, monthly in-service, staff development initiatives consisting of ARC certification skills, student development, physical fitness components and team initiatives. • Develop and administer assessments/evaluations related to student development including technical skills, student learning outcomes, leadership and ensures compliance with university, departmental ARC, local and state regulations. Coordinates and schedules certification and recertification classes as needed. • Coordinate and implement aquatic development including all monthly in-services, mandatory training, emergency drills, weekly quizzes, incentive programs and ARC certification courses; track and maintain the training and certification database for aquatic staff. • Coordinate and ensure completion of daily, weekly and monthly facility inspections, chemical checks, preventative maintenance, and cleaning duties; record retention of all related documents. • Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of the comprehensive aquatic & department emergency action plans. • Assist with the facilitation and operation of large scale swim and dive meets, and special events. • Assist in the management of the aquatic budget related to staffing, training and development, certifications, and health and safety classes. • Assist with the management and maintenance of the aquatic facilities and equipment to ensure the safety of all participants and staff. • Performs other job-related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology, Health Education, Physical Education, Sports Management, Recreation or related field. Master’s degree preferred. Candidate must possess American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid certifications. Certified Pool Operator/Aquatic Facility Operator, and Water Safety Instructor, or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment. Minimum requirements are at least 1 year of experience in an aquatic management position. Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as demonstrated leadership ability are also desirable. Team oriented ideals, strong work ethic, and a desire to learn is important in this position.
