Responsible for managing and coordinating the day to-day administration of the Green Bike Program and Outdoor Recreation Center Rental Shop including budget, supervising staff, developing and implementing program policies/procedures according to university and departmental policies.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
25% Staff Supervision
Responsible for the direct supervision of 2-5 bike & ski techs (1 FTE) and ten rental attendants (1.5 FTE) including hiring, daily supervision, directing work, and evaluation. Develops and implements comprehensive training program including point of sale training, bike and ski maintenance, outdoor rental gear use, emergency response, customer service, risk management, and conflict resolution.
35% Program Management
Responsible for rental and retail operations of the Outdoor Rental Shop and Bike Shop including generation of approximately $50,000 annual sales. Responsible for product pricing, ordering, selection, inventory management for approximately $250,000 in rental gear.
Oversees daily operations of Green Bike bicycle share program, managing rentals, late fees, bike maintenance and distribution. Ensures appropriate percentage of $400,000 bike fleet is available for rental at all times during bike season.
Oversee daily operations of Rental and Bike Shops as well as Green Bike program to ensure highest standards of customer service are provided to potential and current customers. Ensures attendants are knowledgeable and friendly and manages quality of rental experience for all patrons.
Complete and submit all reports, evaluation, tracking, participant/staff records, and other project and position-related paperwork and presentations in a timely manner.
Responsible for development and review of procedures and rules from Green Bike program and Rental Shop.
10% Fiscal Management
Responsible for staff managing daily point of sale service at two cashier locations totaling over $50,000 in annual sales. Manage cashier till cash, cashier training, and cashier discipline. Develop and implement department cash handling procedures. Ensure proper compliance with department, university, and state regulations for cash handling and receipting.
Manage, develop and verify payroll budget. Determine equipment rental fees and monitory revenue, making necessary adjustments to balance budget. Ensure compliance with all department, university, and state policies for payroll processes and regulations.
Responsible for developing equipment depreciation and replacement plans including long term budgeting for equipment replacement.
15% Risk Management
Develop and implement safety and risk management procedures for the Rental Shop and Green Bike program. Obtains and/or maintains all annual certifications and continuing education necessary to meet the highest industry standards available. Ensures all rental gear, including bikes and skis are maintained according to industry standards.
10% Program Facilitation
Facilitate programs (e.g. outdoor trips, bike and/or ski maintenance clinics, challenge course), and department-wide staff trainings. Manage and/or assist with planning and execution of special events.
5% Perform other duties as assigned, including serving on departmental and university committees.
Bachelor's degree in Business, Education, Higher Education, Outdoor Education, Kinesiology, Recreation, Sport Management or related field and three (3) years of directly related experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Bike mechanic experience.
Possession of valid driver’s license.
Ability to obtain and maintain Coaching the Van Driver III certification and WSU van driver’s authorization within 3 months of hire.
Master’s degree in Business, Education, Higher Education, Outdoor Education, Kinesiology, Recreation, Sport Management, or related field.
Four or more years of progressively responsible professional experience developing and administering bike retail operations, bike share/rental operations, outdoor gear rental/retail operations, or outdoor programming.
Professional bike mechanic certification from Barnett Bicycle Institute, United Bicycle Institute, or comparable.
Experience maintaining and repairing rafts and/or alpine skis.
Expertise in instructing one or more of the following outdoor activities and experience with one or more additional: Bike Touring or Bikepacking, Mountain Biking or Road Cycling, Skiing or Snowboarding, Whitewater Rafting or Kayaking, Backpacking, Cross Country Skiing, Canoe or Kayak Touring, Stand-Up Paddleboarding, Backcountry Skiing, Mountaineering, Rock Climbing.
Experience in working with cash register or point of sale systems.
Demonstrated experience administering risk management practices for recreation programs or rental programs.
Demonstrated success in personnel training and supervision of multiple part time staff.
Demonstrated success in working collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies for the development and implementation of recreational programs to a culturally diverse population.
Demonstrated pursuit of professional development through participation in a national industry association or organization.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES OR COMPETENCIES:
Knowledge and experience (certification preferable) in bike, raft, and ski maintenance.
Ability and skillset to maintain and repair rafts, tents, stoves, and other outdoor equipment.
Knowledge of the basic principles and practices associated with personnel management and supervision.
Demonstrated computer software skills, including the ability to use office software, such as databases, spreadsheets, word processing.
