Sam Houston State University has announced two (2) Graduate Assistantships for the upcoming Academic Year in the following areas:
Informal Recreation (Facilities)
All positions will assist in guiding the Recreational Sports Department in a manner consistent with the goals of the department, Division of Student Services, and the mission of Sam Houston State University.
The Graduate Assistant of Fitness will report to the Assistant Director of Fitness.
Propose, plan, and complete a yearly graduate assistant project
Assist in creating and conducting events, programs, and workshops
Prepare group fitness and specialty class schedules
Hire, train, and supervise group fitness, personal training, and lead staff
Develop and conduct training and evaluations for fitness staff
Assists in teaching the Group Fitness Instructor and ACE Personal Trainer Prep Courses
Conduct and plan monthly staff meetings and staff development opportunities
Purchase, inventory, maintain and assess equipment
Assist with promoting and marketing fitness classes, programs, and other Recreational Sports events
Update and implement instructor training and staff manuals
Assist with the administrative duties
Conduct EAP evaluations with Fitness staff
Assist the Recreational Sports department with other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications: Nationally recognized Group Fitness and/or Personal Training Certification (ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NSCA, NASM) required. Experience instructing group fitness classes and/or personal training is required. Candidates must have knowledge/experience in recreational sports or sports management, strong human relations skills, and acceptance into SHSU graduate school. CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.
INFORMAL RECREATION (Facilities)
This position reports to the Senior Assistant Director of Informal Recreation. This position helps supervise the day-to-day operations of the assigned program areas and also provides day-to-day direction, guidance, and supervision to the students assigned to support the recreational sports programs in the assigned program areas.
Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate undergraduate student staff
Supervise the Recreational Sports Center (RSC) mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekend hours as needed
Develop and conduct student staff orientation, in-service training, and workshops
Assist with payroll processes for student staff
Assist with purchasing, inventory, and maintenance of facility and equipment
Assist with the scheduling of facilities, including the RSC, McAdams Tennis Courts, and sand volleyball courts
Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications: Candidates must have knowledge/experience in recreational sports or sports management, strong human relations skills, and acceptance into SHSU graduate school. CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.
All successful Graduate Assistant candidates will demonstrate the following:
Bachelor's Degree in a related area
Acceptance into the SHSU Graduate program and enrollment in 6 hours or more in graduate courses. If you are a new graduate student at SHSU and begin work during the summer, you must be enrolled in graduate summer courses.
Computer knowledge, including proficiency with Windows-based computer system and Microsoft applications.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies
Excellent customer service skills

This position may require driving and operating a university vehicle, therefore, a valid Texas driver license and driving record acceptable to the university’s insurance carrier is required.

Additional Salary Information:
First-year graduate assistants will receive $1444 per month for a 9-month appointment.
The salary for second year graduate assistants is $1555 per month for a 9-month appointment.
Out of state tuition waiver included (student is responsible for in-state tuition).
Registration to one regional and one national NIRSA conference will be paid annually.
Summer stipend (June 1-August 31) available.
