The Fitness & Instructional Training (FIT) Senior Coordinator is responsible for the administration and management of instructional programs and personal training services, to include the coordinating of fitness assessments/screenings and developing and implementing fitness-related special events. This position also has administrative review responsibilities associated with the group exercise program. Duties encompass a wide variety of personnel management, budget development and monitoring, facility operations, risk management, policy and procedures development, program administration, and program assessment and evaluation. This position directly supervises and provides leadership to the personal training staff instruction program staffs and reports to the Associate Director for Programs.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Personal Fitness Training Programming:
Plan, coordinate, and manage a comprehensive personal training, small group training, and fitness assessment/screening program.
Manage the registration process for the personal fitness training programming.
Collaborate with university partners to create and promote fitness resources for students, faculty/staff, and Recreational Sports members.
Create and deliver fitness orientated presentations, workshops, and seminars.
Identify and implement fitness related initiatives for the university community and to encourage and foster healthy lifestyle choices.
Create and revise policies and procedures for the personal fitness training program.
Regularly train clients to continue to practice and employ fitness instructional skills and maintain professional competencies.
Instructional Programming Services:
Develop and implement a comprehensive instructional program, including fitness-related instructional programs; life sport instructional programs (e.g., tennis lessons, dance lessons, etc.); and collaborative instructional programs.
Collaborate with Marketing & Communications to create promotional material for the launch of instructional services.
Engage university community to estimate program demand, and recruit and select instructional staff to meet that demand.
Establish appropriate campus and community pricing structure for services based on market analysis and projected revenue goals.
Group Exercise Program:
Serve as the point of contact to the external community for fitness related programs and special events
Review scheduling procedures and final class schedules for the group exercise program
Review regimen and procedures implemented in courses to train group exercise instructors
Directly supervise a graduate assistant assigned to personal fitness and instructional programs.
Recruit, hire, train, develop, schedule, supervise, and evaluate personal trainers and instructional specialists.
Create, implement, and manage a Fitness Instructor Training program for Personal Fitness Trainers.
Create an environment that promotes and facilitates student learning and development.
Actively participate in the student development program including new employee orientation, the annual employee training program, and on-going training sessions and in-services.
Regularly monitor staff time and verify payroll.
Identify partnerships to train and recruit new personal trainers and instructional specialists.
Provide an effective risk management plan for individuals participating in the personal fitness training program or utilizing Fitness Center spaces.
Monitor participants and personal training staff to ensure exercise routines are in alignment with best practices and industry standards, including demonstrating knowledge of properly modifying exercise programs for high-risk participants.
Ensure all staff maintain appropriate certifications required for their positional duties.
Schedule training/certification classes and/or provide instruction in First Aid and CPR/AED for employees.
Conduct regular risk management audits of activities, facilities, and equipment and report work order needs to the Facilities Maintenance staff.
Program Promotion/Public Relations:
Assist with the development of strategies to publicize and promote fitness and instructional programs.
Collaborate with the Assistant Director for Marketing & Communications to create marketing and promotional materials for fitness and instructional programs.
Actively participate in the promotion of fitness and instructional programs by staffing outreach events.
Develop and manage annual budgets for personal fitness training program and instructional programs.
Identify, implement, and utilize appropriate assessment and program evaluation strategies to inform policy and procedural decision-making, programming, facility operations, and resource allocation.
Conduct regular equipment inventories and research new equipment and other resources following established procurement guidelines.
Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, in-service education sessions, and other divisional or departmental meetings.
Participate in other Division of Student Affairs initiatives, programs, and committees as required.
Collaborate with other university departments in support of the academic mission.
Assist in the overall operation of the department by providing input and completing assigned projects, annual goals and objectives, and annual reports.
Maintain professional skill sets and certifications as appropriate for job responsibilities and as a campus recreation professional.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Director for Programs.
Master's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Recreation or related field
Two years of experience working in university/college recreational setting (Graduate Assistant experience can be accepted)
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
National Personal Training certification by ACE, ACSM, AFAA, or equivalent
National Group Exercise Instructor certification by ACE, ACSM, AFAA, or equivalent
Knowledge of current practices and standards in strength and conditioning programming
Ability to train clients requiring significant physical activity
Demonstrated experience in the creation and implementation of personal training programming
Ability to take initiative, problem solve, and meet deadlines
Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
Ability to lift and handle physical equipment set-ups for various activities
First Aid, CPR/AED Instructor
Previous experience with software applications utilized for the administration of personal training related programming.
Position involves working some evenings and some weekends
Position is located in a non-smoking work area
Additional Salary Information: POSITION: This position is a full-time twelve-month University Academic Professional position. Position includes full VCU University Academic Professional benefits package – health insurance, tuition waiver and five (5) weeks’ vacation.
