The Director of Recreational Sports leads a strong and committed staff and manages facilities that serve a campus community of over 60,000 students, as well as a large number of faculty and staff. The director is responsible for a wide variety of administrative and supervisory duties for a multi-faceted and dynamic campus recreational program. The Director utilizes a broad range of programmatic, financial, personnel, and facility management skills while overseeing: facility design and construction; program and policy development; leadership development; program assessment; strategic planning; facility scheduling and coordination; retail operations; budget; personnel; maintenance; security; and risk management.
The Director is the chief administrative officer of the Department of Recreational Sports. The Director maintains the mission, vision and overall direction of the Department of Recreational Sports; develops evaluation strategies and policies for ensuring that the department is delivering quality facilities, programs, and services to the university community; and maintains and implements a detailed risk management program. Specifically, this includes the management of multiple indoor and outdoor facilities, as well as a variety of program areas such as outdoor adventures, aquatics, strength & conditioning, intramural sports, sport clubs, and fitness/wellness programs. The Director serves as the university’s liaison to Sterling Golf, the management company responsible for operating The Golf Club at Texas A&M University; directs the efforts of and globally supervises 33 full-time staff, 9 graduate assistants and 1,100 student workers; supervises and evaluates one Senior Associate Director, Associate and/or Assistant Directors, and one Senior Administrative Coordinator.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong technical and communication skills, ability to manage and forecast in excess of $17 million budget, and experience with Rec Sports construction projects.
Bachelor’s Degree in applicable field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Ten years of related experience in sport management, leadership, business, or administration.
Master’s Degree in sport management, business, leadership, administration or equivalent combination of education and experience. Fifteen years related experience in sport management, leadership, business or administration. Experience with large scale and Rec Sports program and facility management.
