35% Event Management:
Develop, implement and manage all climbing area programming; Assist with planning trips, clinics, and challenge course programs; Manage day-to-day operations of the indoor climbing area; Structure operations to meet industry standards and safety regulations through development of policies and procedures.
25% Program Development:
Coordinate/lead trips including backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, etc.; trips will contain experiential education, service learning, and leisure components; Assist with the training of student staff to become trip leaders; Build working relationships and collaborative programs with campus departments to foster student involvement in university programs; Assist with the development of learning outcomes and program assessment tools and tactics.
20% Administrative & Personnel:
Assist with hiring, training, supervising, and evaluation of student employees; Maintain student payroll and tracking; Manage individual trip budgets; Research and recommend needed equipment and supply purchases; Assist with the preparation of monthly and annual usage reports.
20% Program & Professional Development:
Provide feedback regarding departmental programs, equipment, and operations by conducting daily observations/engaging in programs and using equipment/facilities; Immediately report safety concerns to the functional area supervisor; Be active professionally through research, publications, presentations, speaking engagements, and involvement in professional associations; Maintains positive co-worker relationships and fosters an environment of trust and inclusion; Contribute positively to the work environment by participating in honest dialog that is indicative of the department’s culture of teamwork; Represent University Recreation for various University/community functions, committee work, and other duties as assigned; Willingly shares all information with department teammates in an effort to provide high quality outcomes that contribute to student success; Provide staff coverage during evenings, weekends, and special events as determined by department & function need.
Bachelor's degree with 1 year of experience in adventure/experiential education, with particular emphasis in university recreation and facilitating climbing programs for diverse client groups.
Master's degree in outdoor recreation, recreation, sport management, experiential education or related field with 3 years of experience working in adventure/experiential education with particular emphasis in university recreation and facilitating climbing programs for diverse client groups.
Special or Physical Qualifications:
Proficiency in range of outdoor skills including but not limited to backpacking, rock climbing, paddling, and group facilitation. Mobility within these outdoor activities is required; including swimming, climbing, hiking, etc. Ability to work flexible hours. Driving LSU state vehicles is required. A valid Louisiana Class E driver’s license is required (ability to obtain within 1 month of employment). Ability to lift 50 pounds. Strong leadership, oral/written communication, organizational, as well as supervisory/training skills are essential for success. Due to the nature of this position and/or position responsibilities, this position is subject to random drug & alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67.
Either possess or have the ability to obtain with 3 months of employment:
AMGA/PCIA Single Pitch Instructor (or higher)
Wilderness First Aid (or higher)
