The University of California Santa Cruz campus recreation unit is known as the Office of Physical Education, Recreation & Sports (OPERS). It is a dynamic unit in the campus community that comprises intramural sports, sports clubs, group fitness, outdoor adventures, classes and workshops, NCAA athletics, and physical education. OPERS boasts 33 professional staff serving an enrollment of approximately 18,000 students. OPERS is the second-largest student employer on campus with about 250 student employees working in facilities and various program areas.
Experienced leader for large, complex, and diverse non-credited recreational or sports programming. Designs, creates, implements and instructs recreational programs for participants of all ages. Regularly works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Typically leads or supervises other staff or students. Assist with each of the following program areas: Sports Clubs, Intramural Sports, Sammy Slug Summer Camp, and any camp expansion programming. Required tasks in each of these programs include carrying out marketing campaigns, staff recruitment, hiring, training, program operations, assessment, and compliance efforts. Advise Sports Clubs organizations' student leadership on club operations according to university policy and best practices. Supervise approximately 50 unique student employees throughout the program areas previously mentioned. Evaluate and implement new programs if appropriate oversight, facility space, and market exists. Administer an annual operating budget of over $160,000 for Sports Clubs & Intramural Sports. Steward an annual operating budget of approximately $87,000 for Sammy Slug Summer Camp. Required to demonstrate considerable discretion, initiative and independence to resolve issues and perform other duties as assigned.
Highly effective verbal and written communication skills in the English language.
Strong proficiency in the use of basic computer applications relevant to job duties.
Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization.
Demonstrated ability to work in youth camps, intramural sports, and/or sports clubs programs.
Demonstrated experience explaining complex eligibility rules in a concise manner to administration, coaches, and student-athletes.
Capable of coordinating and collaborating with management and staff across all levels of the organization.
Experience exercising good judgment and discretion handling highly confidential and /or sensitive material requiring maintenance of strict confidentiality at all times.
Experience working with and supporting students and staff from diverse backgrounds (e.g., ethnic and cultural diversity, socioeconomic, religious, sexual orientation, and gender).
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
