Wichita State University, Department of Campus Recreation is excited to be the host of NIRSA Basketball Championships in 2019,2020 and 2021. We are currently accepting applications for the aquatics and special events graduate assistantships to begin in the Fall of 2018. The person in this position will help with many aspects of hosting the championships.
Aquatics and Special Events GA
The Graduate Assistant of Aquatics and Special Events is a graduate assistant-level position who reports to Campus Recreation’s Coordinator of Aquatics and Special Events. This person is primarily responsible for collaborating and assisting the Coordinator with hiring, training, supervision, evaluation of aquatics employees, risk management, as well as the development, assessment, management, and marketing of aquatics programs and events. Moreover, the Graduate Assistant will assist the Coordinator with planning and executing multiple campus recreation’s special events.
Some of the duties include:
Assist and lead recruiting, hiring, training, supervision, scheduling, and performance evaluation of Aquatics Staff
Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Facilities and Risk Management in the development, implementation, and evaluation of Campus Recreation’s Aquatics programs
Provide continuing educational components to Aquatics staff through program in-services
Play a key role in the overall marketing and promotion of all Aquatics programs and activities
Oversee the swim lesson program and provide monthly reports
Evaluate and uphold risk management policies and procedure for Aquatics programs and throughout the entire building
Assist with coordinating Risk Management in-service trainings for all staff
Participation in special events, conferences, and other developmental opportunities
Responsible for facility and pool supervision on a rotational basis.
Organize and lead high-profile special event programs which include the 5k Pumpkin Run Road Race, Health Fair, Puppy Paddle, Welcomefest, F45 Playoffs, WU Lifts, Talks with Toby, The Amazing Race, Springfest and many more
Table at the orientations and assist during admissions events
Help oversee Recreation and Wellness LLC programs
Serve on a committee for NIRSA Basketball Championships

Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Health Science, Physical Education, Recreation & Sport Management, or related field with a GPA of 2.75 or above.
Admission in good academic standing (not on probation) into Wichita State University’s Graduate School in a graduate degree program
Additional Salary Information: - Nine month appointment for up to 5 academic semesters. Summer employment is available.
- Out of state tuition waiver with 75% of up to 9 academic credit hours paid for by the Department of Campus Recreation
- Stipend of $5,500.00 semester /$11,000.00 annual
-Individuals can be provided tuition reimbursement, (100%) for Spring semester/2nd year up to 9 credit hours, based upon performance expectations as set for by department and direct supervisor.
