The Outdoor Adventure program is part of Campus Recreation under the Division of Student Affairs at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN. We are recruiting staff to support our diverse summer programming efforts.
July will focus on training and preparing for the Buccaneer Outdoor Adventure (BOA), a four-day, three-night outdoor orientation program for incoming freshman at ETSU. August will be programming intensive with BOA sessions and the Roan Scholar Outdoor Challenge. The Roan Scholar Outdoor Challenge is an intensive outdoor program lasting seven days for incoming scholarship students.
Work as a team leader/member to implement the four-day, three-night BOA experience. There will be three sessions during the month of July and August, with training taking place in July. Each session will consist of between 6 – 16 incoming students, the Lead Instructor and two or three Assistant Instructors. All instructors will report to the Outdoor Adventure Assistant Director. Assistant Instructor(s) will report to a Lead Instructor while in the field.
The ideal candidate will possess passion and commitment for experientially based adventure education, high integrity, excellent communication skills, problem solving abilities, maturity, the ability to conduct student learning outcomes/assessment, and willingness to serve others in a physically demanding environment.
Primary Duties • Pre-trip participant communication and preparation • Clerical reporting of evaluations and assessments • Fiscal accountability for: o Petty cash receipts o Purchasing of food and supplies o Reporting expenses via university Travel Claim policies and procedures • Equipment and vehicle management and maintenance • Program planning, implementation, and risk management
Secondary Duties • Challenge Course facilitation – Lead facilitator • Climbing Wall staffing • Rental Equipment service
Additional Duties – as assigned by the Assistant Director for Outdoor Adventure or Director of Campus Recreation

Minimum Qualifications: • 21 years or older • Current Wilderness First Aid certification • Experience leading multi-day/multi-sport outdoor overnight activities • Challenge Course leadership experience • Ability to lead group discussions and processing • Valid driver’s license • Ability to drive a large van with a trailer • Eligible for hire with ETSU Campus Recreation
Preferred qualifications: • Current Wilderness First Responder certification • Coursework in outdoor leadership combined with graduate studies in college student development • Experience with river and lake sports and challenge course facilitation
