The Graduate Assistant for Fitness & Wellness is primarily responsible for the hiring, training, supervision, evaluation of health & fitness employees, risk management, as well as the development, assessment, management, and marketing of health & fitness programs and events. This position is also a contributing member of the overall operation to successfully deliver on a wide-range of Recreation Services programming.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, scheduling, and performance evaluation of health & fitness staff
The development, implementation, and evaluation of Recreation Services health & fitness programs
Provide continuing educational components to health & fitness staff through program in-services
Instruct instructional training courses for Personal Training and Group Fitness positions
Track and record department data to be used for statistical analysis
Assist in programming monthly wellness special events such as Women & Weights & Healthy Hornet Challenge
Instruct a minimum of one group fitness class each block during the academic year
Assist in the overall development of all fitness student workers
Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Health Science, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport Management, or related field
Admission in good academic standing into Emporia State University’s Graduate School in a graduate degree program
A minimum of one year of experience in the fitness and wellness field, campus recreation fitness/wellness position, or community fitness recreation programming
Ability to supervise others and work in a dynamic, changing, and diverse environment
Genuine interest in gaining experience and knowledge to enhance skills in chosen career
Strong written and oral communication skills
Competent in personal training and leading a group exercise class format
Certification in group fitness and/or personal training from NSCA, AFAA, ACE, or ACSM
CPR/First Aid certification or the ability to obtain certification prior to start date
Experience recruiting, training, supervising, and evaluating fitness instructors and/or personal trainers
Knowledge and experience in performing fitness assessments

Nine month appointment for up to 4 academic semesters. Summer employment is available.
Out of state tuition waiver with 9 hours of academic credit paid for by the Department of Recreation Services.
Full-time graduate assistants will receive a stipend of approximately $7,344 for the academic year, and an option for summer employment. Subsidized graduate assistant health insurance is available. Student is responsible for semester fees which.
