The fitness and wellness coordinator is a key member of the Salem State University Gassett Fitness Center staff that offers programs including fitness, wellness, aquatics, intramural sports, club sports, informal recreation and special events. Under the direct supervision of the associate director of campus recreation, the fitness and wellness coordinator will oversee all aspects of the fitness and wellness program to include personal/small group training, fitness assessment, non-credit instructional programs, special events, incentive programs, group exercise instruction and specialty fitness classes, while assisting with the operation of the Gassett Fitness Center. The fitness and wellness coordinator supervises student staff which may include fitness attendants, membership specialists, facility supervisors, lifeguards, swim instructors, group exercise instructors and personal trainers. The fitness and wellness coordinator will also supervise part-time instructors and trainers. This position requires regular early morning and some evening and weekend commitments. Position hours 5:45 am – 1:45 pm.
(E) Responsible for the supervision of the day to day operations of the Gassett Fitness Center
(E) Plan, develop, promote and deliver a comprehensive fitness and wellness program to include fitness consultations/assessments, educational seminars, wellness events, incentive programs, group exercise initiatives, personal/small group training programs, instructional programs and specialized activities
(E) Recruit, interview, hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate staff in areas of responsibility
(E) Provide leadership in the areas of student and recreational program development through regular training sessions and meetings for student employees
(E) Maintain current knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively perform and/or teach for a wide variety of group exercise classes and training programs. Lead group exercise classes and personal training sessions as needed
(E) Coordinate group exercise and personal training certification programs (i.e. ACE Curriculum)
(E) Conduct CPR/AED/First Aid certification courses for fitness center staff
(E) Supervise the utilization, operation, inventory, and maintenance of all fitness equipment
(E) Evaluate, track and compile statistical information for fitness and wellness program areas including daily, weekly and monthly measures
(E) Provide inclusive and alternative fitness programming for diverse ability levels and develop, plan, administer and evaluate special population programming
(E) Research industry trends and assess new and current programming
(E) Provide education and outreach programs, including training and leadership opportunities, within the student life curriculum
Work with supervisor to develop and revise administrative policies and procedures within areas of responsibility
Thorough understanding of risk management protocols as it relates to fitness and wellness programming. Ability to develop risk management policies and procedures to ensure participant safety
Assist with staff hiring, payroll and administrative records for department
Collaborate with the wellness cluster to achieve goals and student learning outcomes related to co-curricular programming
Assist with planning and implementation of department programs and events
Support Student Life initiatives and programming such as student orientation
Work with campus prevention task force to minimize risk concerns impacting university students
Serve as an advocate for health and fitness within higher education and its support of student development and continual education
Utilizes Map-Works in support of student success
Serves on committees as assigned
Demonstrates sensitivity to students with a diversity of learning styles
Other duties as assigned
1. Bachelor's degree in recreation, physical education, sports management, kinesiology or related field
2. Two or more years of experience overseeing fitness and wellness programming in a college or university setting
3. Two or more years of experience in successful management of student staff in a collegiate recreation program
4. Nationally Accredited Certification in both Personal Training and Group Exercise
5. Experience and willingness teach a wide variety of group exercise classes, small group training programs, and work with clients with a variety of needs and abilities
6. CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
7. Membership and participation in the NIRSA
11. Budget preparation, monitoring, and payroll/invoice tracking experience
Master's Degree in recreation, physical education, sports management, kinesiology or related field
Experience with Fusion point of sale/facility access software
CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor certified or ability to obtain upon hire
Experience developing and delivering presentations to groups
Knowledge in assessment methods and activities
