Purpose of Position:This position is responsible for coordinating the “WellU®”, student wellness incentive program and Health Education & Promotion program for the Intramural Recreational Sports department at WKU. Provide overall strategic direction, leadership, assessment, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of all campus health education and promotion initiatives. This will involve integrating with various campus departments including Counseling, Environmental Health and Safety, Greek Life, Health Services, Housing and Residence Life, Intercollegiate Athletics, Intramural Recreational Sports, Public Health, and the University Police. Providing one-on-one health counseling as well as delivering group presentations is an integral part of the job function. The Student Wellness Coordinator will report directly to the Assistant Director, Health & Fitness.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:The following duties are customary of this position, but are not to be construed as all-inclusive. Duties may be added, deleted and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs.
Coordinate the WellU® student wellness program, Health Education & Promotion and the Wholesome program with various campus partners to provide a comprehensive online schedule of health and wellness programs and services for WKU students.
Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate three graduate assistants who will assist with the implementation, marketing, coordination and assessment of the WellU® student wellness program and Health Education and Promotion program.
Oversee and maintain the WellU® student wellness and health education and promotion website including content and design.
Assist the Assistant Director, Health & Fitness with the WellU® student wellness program budget and Health Education and Promotion program budget to include programming initiatives and operating expenses. Assist with stewarding the J. Clifford Todd professorship in Longevity and Healthful Living Endowment which funds “WellU®”, student wellness program.
Coordinate the WellU® incentive program including the procurement of incentive prizes, the documentation of winners, and coordination of scholarship awards.
Coordinate the Annual Student Health Fair.
Recruit, hire, train, and supervise student workers, interns or volunteers for the WellU® program and the Health Education and Promotion Program.
Act as a resource person for students, faculty and staff for all relevant and up to date health education and promotion materials and literature.
Responsible for the development, organization, implementation, evaluation and marketing of a comprehensive & effective WellU® student wellness program and Health Education and Promotion program.
Develop and conduct health and wellness presentations to the campus community with primary emphasis to the student body.
Oversee the Topper Well Peer Health Educators by actively assisting in the recruitment, training, scheduling, and evaluating of the student members and the programs.
Ensure the program is compliant with the ACHA’s Health Promotion Guidelines and Healthy Campus 2020 Initiatives.
Distribute and oversee the data collection for program evaluations and ACHA-NCHA surveys. Responsible for assessing the data and developing measurable objectives for programs and services.
Pursue and maintain WKU’s compliance with all relevant legislation regarding student health.
Initiate timely and necessary communication with the Assistant Director, Health & Fitness on any relevant issues.
Secondary Duties & Responsibilities:
Develops and cultivates relationships with various university and local community departments and organizations.
Assists in the development and implementation of departmental and divisional special events when requested.
Assists in the development and implementation of departmental and university strategic and assessment plans.
Assist the Assistant Director, Health & Fitness with the administration of the ACHA National College Health Assessment.
Assist with the development of departmental risk management, marketing, membership, customer service, and staff development plans.
Serve on university committees and workgroups as assigned/needed.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Director, Health & Fitness
Minimum Training & Experience Required: 1. Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Health Education, Community Health, Exercise Science or a related field. 2. 1-2 years of direct supervisory and management duties. 3. 1-2 years of professional experience as a health educator and/or related wellness programming. 4. Effective organizational, motivational, communication, writing, and public relations skills. 5. Proven ability to create an atmosphere of sensitivity toward cultural, sexual, religious and racial differences among people. Note: Serving as a Graduate, Teaching, or Research Assistant will be considered as Professional Experience
Knowledge and Skills Considered Essential for Success:
HIV/Aids Certification or completion of HIV Education and Training Curriculum Preferred
Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or an equivalent certification from a recognized professional health education organization.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and SPSS wording knowledge.
CPR/First Aid/AED Certifications
Strong interpersonal, motivational, and communication skills.
Working knowledge of office equipment (copier, computers, fax, printers, etc.)
Active knowledge of graphic design, web development, and social media tools.
A commitment to stay current with current and emerging marketing and promotion tools and resources.
Excellent writing and computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite)
Knowledge of multiple print medium and formats.
Active knowledge of current trends in campus health and recreation.
The ability to process multiple tasks and formulate decisions
Ability to communicate across various cultures.
Effective time management and organizational skills
The ability/willingness to confront personnel issues in a timely manner
Necessary ability to manage several projects with concurrent timelines.
Must be able to perform the physical labor required to prepare facilities and equipment for use during student wellness events.
A willingness to learn.
An independent focus on personal health & fitness.
Physical and Mental Abilities Required:
This is a position requiring maturity, balance, multi-tasking, mental stamina and the ability to think critically and independently. This position may require long periods of sitting at the computer, attending meetings or standing for long periods of time conducting presentations or programs. It may also require light lifting of supplies and equipment and potentially for program set up. The ability to maintain a balanced perspective on sensitive issues is essential. The ability to handle stress and periodic overload in a mature manner is essential to this position.
