The Assistant Director for Structured Sports & Outreach Programming is responsible for the management and administration of Sport Clubs, Intramural Sports, Youth and Family Programming, Instructional Programming, Adaptive and Inclusive Programming, and Special Events. The responsibilities encompass a wide variety of administrative and supervisory duties in the areas of budget, personnel, and program management; policy development; student staff development; and programmatic expansion. The Assistant Director directly supervises the Intramural Sports Coordinator, Sport Clubs & Risk Management Coordinator, and Athletic Trainer. S/he also provides senior leadership for the Graduate Assistant for Intramural Sports, Graduate Assistant for Sport Clubs, and over 75 student employees. This position reports to the Associate Director for Programs.
Specific Responsibilities Include: Program Management – Administer, manage, and establish a strategic plan for the Structured Sport and Inclusive Recreation program areas Risk Management – Develop, implement, and evaluate an effective risk management plan for the department Personnel Management – Provide leadership for three full time professionals and two graduate assistants Program Promotion/ Public Relations – Assist with the development of strategies to publicize and promote programmatic offerings in areas of responsibilities. Fiscal/Database/Equipment Management – Prepare, analyze and report participation statistics and assist with program evaluations and assessments in areas of responsibility. Participate in the departmental budget allocation process by forecasting projected expenditures, identifying long-term capital improvement projects, and setting revenue projections for all programming areas. General administration – Collaborate with campus partners within the Division of Student Affairs and academic units to develop and implement programs and events that contribute to student success.
Master’s degree in recreation, sports management, health and physical education or related field Minimum of 3 years full-time professional experience that has included direct responsibility in campus recreation program management Minimum of 1 year of experience supervising full-time professional staff Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU Demonstrated administrative skills and experience in: planning, implementing, and evaluating programs; budget development and fiscal/statistical management; long-range planning; project management; organizational strategic planning; and risk management Demonstrated experience in all aspects of personnel management and staff development; ability to motivate and supervise staff Ability to take initiative, problem solve, and meet deadlines Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to work collaboratively
