The University of Virginia Department of Intramural-Recreational Sports, a division of Athletics, seeks a Director of Outdoor Adventure to provide leadership developing and implementing a variety of instructional outdoor recreation programs ranging from short kayaking trips to multi-day new student orientation trips, and the management of facilities including a climbing center consisting of bouldering along with belay and lead climbing, challenge course consisting of low and high elements, and rental center through coordinated planning, direction, facilitation, assessment, and risk management to achieve University and department goals. This position is responsible for training and supervising of Recreation Program Staff, student employees and volunteers. This position also is responsible for mid and long-term strategic planning, program offerings and logistics, facility inspections and maintenance needs, and monitoring of key performance indicators. This is a full time, 12-month, 40 hour per week salaried exempt position with benefits. Base work hours typically M-F, 9:30 am-6:30 pm with evening and weekend hours as needed to ensure high quality service levels and staff supervision. This is a restricted position.
A Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience in lieu of degree is required. Preference given to a Master's degree in Outdoor Recreation Leadership, Outdoor Education.
A minimum of two years' experience in on-site development and implementation of collegiate or community-based outdoor adventure recreation program including indoor climbing/bouldering and/or challenge course. Supervising and training part-time employees in a collegiate or community-based environment within outdoor adventure facilities and/or programs. Knowledge of developing or administering a risk management/safety program for a campus or community adventure recreation programming.
