OUTDOOR ADVENTURES COORDINATOR STUDENT UNION INC. | SPARTAN RECREATION SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY
SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Competitive Sports & Outdoor Adventures Manager, the Outdoor Adventures Coordinator is responsible for the programs and services of Outdoor Adventures and the Climbing Wall.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide supervision for outdoor adventure programs and services: Outdoor Adventures programming including trips, trip leader training, events, workshops, and rental equipment; and Indoor Rock Climbing area programming including, training, workshops, events, rock-climbing leader training, and rental equipment.
Assist the Competitive Sports & Outdoor Adventures Manager with the development and maintenance of budgets for Outdoor Adventures and the Climbing Wall.
Assists the Competitive Sports & Outdoor Adventures Manager with staff supervision including hiring, training, scheduling, evaluations, payroll and disciplinary processes.
Assists the Competitive Sports & Outdoor Adventures Manager with the development of emergency procedures, safety practices, and risk management procedures that include maintenance of equipment with inventory for security and safety.
Assists the SRAC marketing staff with implementing publicity strategies to maximize participation.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
Demonstrated knowledge of outdoor recreation and rock climbing.
Supervisory experience including evaluation, assessment, and motivation of student staff.
Ability to effectively communicate written and orally.
Ability to assist in the development, coordination, and assessment of a department budget.
Work and communicate effectively with a widely diverse university community.
Demonstrated experience working with software applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, internet and e-mail.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree and two years of comparable experience in outdoor recreation programming preferred.
Valid driver’s license and completion of a SJSU defensive driving course within three months of employment is required.
Current CPR and First Aid certifications required
Wilderness First Responder and Lifeguard certification required or the mandatory attainment of these certifications within three months of employment.
Climbing training through American Mountain Guide Association or Professional Climbing Instructor preferred or ability to attain within three months of employment.
Demonstrated knowledge and technical skills associated with standard outdoor programming in multiple areas including, but not limited to backpacking/hiking, rock climbing, climbing wall management, biking/bike maintenance, mountaineering, camping, snow sports, and water sports (kayaking).
Knowledge and experience in repair and maintenance of outdoor equipment preferred.
Knowledge and experience with current industry and risk management standards for all types of outdoor adventure trips and indoor climbing facilities required.
Documented experience in outdoor leadership required.
This position is an Exempt from the provisions of Section 1 of the California Industrial Welfare Commission Orders.
SALARY RANGE: $ 47,496 - $ 70,973
