The Assistant Coordinator of the Outdoor Program assists the Coordinator of the Outdoor Program with administration responsibilities for the overall management of the Colorado Mesa University Outdoor Program. The Assistant Coordinator provides leadership for the Colorado Mesa University Outdoor Program and its services through policy development, personnel, management, fiscal direction, and long-range planning.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other related duties maybe assigned.
Oversees and manages the Outdoor Program Rental program including: Operation of Fusion rental software Repairs of rental equipment Training of front desk staff for proper check-in and check-out of equipment Proper cash handling policy for rentals program Create and maintain the OP Maintenance plan of all equipment, replacement schedule, and inventory. Develops and maintains strategic plan to grow the rental program in to a revenue generating operation Supervises and manages the Rental Program Student Coordinator in the development of new campus programs and ways to grow the participation and revenue in the program. Assists with providing leadership in the development of curricular and extra-curricular programs for students through experimental learning opportunities, the advertisement of the Outdoor program, and collaborative programming on campus, especially in areas of environmental and recreational programs.
The Assistant Coordinator plans and coordinates on-campus and weekly events including but not limited to Monday Kayak Roll Sessions, Thursday and Tuesday Afternoon Outings, Student Orientation Fairs and other campus wide events.
Assists in providing Swift Water Rescue Certification Course, Intro to Kayaking Class, and Intro to Rafting Class each semester through the Outdoor Program.
Assists in the creation of student staff policies and procedures for position development in departmental operations and is responsible for recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of student workers for office staff.
Oversees and manages the MavBike program including the accurate check-in, check-out, payment, deposit, repair, upkeep, documentation, and charges to students,
Assists in ensuring that student employees and participants adhere to safety guidelines and follow appropriate emergency/accident procedures for all injuries and incidents.
Lends budgetary assistance for all operations in the Outdoor Program including budget management and cash handling. Works with the Outdoor Program staff in developing an overall marketing program for the Outdoor Program including promotion of events and activities.
Supervises student leaders with programming for various organizations, committees, and individual positions within the OP and assists in developing and producing on-going special opportunities and training to enhance the development of leadership skills and awareness among students.
Assists in the hiring, training, and supervision of the Outdoor Program volunteers and trip leaders; Participates in tasks and activities in support of the mission of Colorado Mesa University., including serving as a liaison with university departments and community groups, representing the best interests of the students, the university, and the Outdoor Program. Assists in coordinating the event calendars for spring, fall, and summer including planning and scheduling trips and outings.
This position reports directly to the Coordinator of the Outdoor Program. The Assistant Coordinator supervises student staff employees of the OP.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Knowledge of use and maintenance of various types of outdoor equipment. Prior experience as a trip leader or guide in an Outdoor Recreation/ Experiential Education program. Prior experience as a trip leader or guide in whitewater rafting or kayaking program. Knowledge and experience in employee supervision and training. Must have a demonstrated understanding of excellent customer service and evidence of having built collaborative partnerships; experience with budget and financial management; and an ability to work with diverse groups of students, staff, and community members. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Broad experience in integrating issues relating to student development in a college/university setting is preferred. General knowledge of computers and prior familiarity with the policies and structure of a typical four year public college/university is helpful. The following certifications are highly preferred. Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician ACA or Rescue 3 International Water Rescue Technician American Canoe Association Kayak Instructor Boatman Guide license from any state Leave No Trace Certification The following certifications/completed training's are also preferred. Rescue 3 International- Swift Water Rescue Instructor American Mountain Guide Association Professional Climbing Instructors Association Avalanche Level 1 and 2 Leave No Trace Master Educator
OUTDOOR ADVENTURE SKILLS/TRAINING
Skill and trip leading experience in Backpacking, Whitewater Kayaking, Whitewater Rafting and at least one of the following areas is required: Caving, Canyoneering, Backcountry Skiing, Avalanche Rescue, 5.9 multi-pitch climbing International Travel in Developing Countries, Mountaineering or Sea Kayaking.
