Primary responsibilities include oversight of a comprehensive fitness and wellness program for two recreation facilities; hiring, training, and supervising group fitness instructors and personal trainers; supervision of massage therapists. Under the leadership of the Associate Director assist with the management of student personnel at the Helfaer Recreation Center and the Rec Plex; assist with the hiring, training, scheduling and supervising of 100 student staff. Design and implement appropriate training and leadership development programs for student staff. Work closely with an experienced team of professionals to maintain the facility and related programs.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. General Supervision of the Rec Plex • Assist with the daily inspection of the facility and equipment for general upkeep and needed repairs. Work with the General Manager and other full-time staff to accomplish needed repairs. • Observe the daily building activity and take note of volume, intensity, patterns, populations and choice of equipment by the participants. Observe participants’ use of equipment, correct any faulty usage habits and facilitate continued and correct utilization. • Observe the daily work habits and procedures of the full-time and part-time support staff. Make any necessary corrections and report them to the appropriate professional staff member. 2. Fitness Program • Develop and implement a comprehensive group fitness program for the Helfaer Recreation Center and Rec Plex facilities. Promote fitness programs for Marquette University students, faculty/staff and Helfaer Recreation Center and Rec Plex members. • Plan, promote and administer all aspects of group fitness programs, personal training, workshops and wellness office management. • Provide opportunities for fitness assessment. Coordinate and oversee the Wellness Center. • Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate wellness center staff and supervisors in addition to 3-4 Exercise Science interns. • Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate group fitness instructors, group fitness supervisors and personal trainers. Coordinate the group fitness, personal trainers and wellness staff payroll process including salary authorizations and timesheets. • Develop and administer a comprehensive instructor training program, including course outlines of choreography, proper • instruction, anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, CPR/first aid, class formatting, music, etc. Maintain current fitness certifications. • Establish monthly fitness workshops to improve fitness instructors’ knowledge, skills, and abilities. Provide opportunities for instructors to attend fitness conferences and gain exposure to professional presenters. • Work the university community to promote and organize fitness related special events and workshops. • Work with the Rec Plex General Manager, Associate Director and Maintenance Services Supervisor on all capital purchases for the Rec Plex Fitness Center and Rec Center Weight Room. 3. Wellness Program • Plan, promote and supervise all aspects of massage therapy. Work closely with the Rec Plex Office Coordinator assisting with appointments, equipment purchases, maintaining city license and payroll. • Hire, supervise and evaluate massage therapists. • Promote massage therapy program through social media, university newsletter, health fairs, etc. • Work in conjunction with other departments on campus to conduct various wellness workshops, health fairs and seminars. • Continue to provide health/wellness related topics for university employees through GROW program. • Serve on the university wide Employee Wellness Committee and other university related wellness programs. 4. Student Personnel • Working under the leadership of the Associate Director assist with the overall management of the Helfaer Rec Center and Rec Plex student personnel. Assist with the hiring, training, supervision, evaluation and scheduling of all part-time building student staff at Rec Center and Rec Plex. • Work with the Associate Director to fill student employee positions. Help coordinate the applications, interviews and evaluation process of Building Supervisor and Service Staff positions. Assist with the training process of all new Building Supervisors and Student Managers. Design and offer ongoing training and leadership development in accordance with NIRSA goals and the missions of the Division of Student Affairs and Marquette University. • Coordinate the Rec Plex student building payroll with the Helfaer Recreation Center Office Associate. • Maintain close contact with the offices of Student Employment and Payroll. • Assist the Associate Director to establish and maintain job descriptions, policies and procedures for all student employees. • Communicate on a regular basis with student staff regarding policies, procedures and personnel. • Work with the Director and Rec Plex General Manager regarding operation and scheduling of recreation facilities. 5. Rec Plex – Open Rec and Special Event Programming • Plan, schedule, publicize and supervise the drop in free recreation activities and programs. • Coordinate with student groups in programming the recreational facilities for special events and recreational activities. • Hire, train, supervise, and retain student staff needed to maintain any of these Special Events and community programming. 6. Assist the Rec Plex General Manager with the management of the Rec Plex and the implementation and enforcement of policies and procedures. 7. Supportive Responsibilities • Participate in Division of Student Affairs committees, activities and programs. • Contribute to Marquette University’s mission and that of the Division of Student Affairs. • Help develop and maintain a healthy campus community of respect, caring and honesty. • Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director. 8. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Master’s degree in recreation or related field required. • At least 1-3 years of experience in a university setting required. • Ability to actively support the university’s mission and Jesuit tradition, a commitment to working collaboratively and to fostering cultural diversity. • Candidates should possess strong customer service skills, supervisory skills and excellent interpersonal and communication skills. • Requires some evening and weekend commitments.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Fitness certifications desired. • Certification in first aid, CPR, AED strongly preferred.
