JOB PURPOSE Reporting to the Associate Director of Recreation Programs, the Assistant Director of Aquatics oversees the execution of the day-to-day operation of the Avery Recreational Pool and the development and management of all aquatic recreational programming. Additionally, this position is responsible for staff scheduling at both aquatic facilities for recreational swim, club sports, intramural sports, university group use and special events. Responsibilities include recruitment, hiring, training, evaluation and continuing education of staff; development and implementation of aquatic programs; marketing programs to participants; assessment of programs to meet tangible metrics for success; ensure programs meet and exceed industry trends; and track various program goals and usage.
CORE DUTIES Program Management (30%) • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Avery Recreational Pool. • Oversee the customer service component of the aquatics program. Formulate innovative and creative methods of recruiting, retaining and serving members of the campus community. • Coordinate the setup, management, and takedown of all aquatic recreational special events. • Manage the coordination of aquatics programs including planning and scheduling classes for the upcoming quarter, coordinating facility use, purchasing and maintaining equipment and quality assurance. • Assist in campus-wide student, faculty and staff well-being initiatives. • Understand and communicate the features, benefits, and advantages of the aquatics program. • Promote aquatics programs to individuals through active, ongoing communications including, but not limited to, departmental talks, social media, email distribution, mail distribution of class flyers, website development and participation in benefits and wellness fairs. • Coordinate the communication, outreach and marketing of all aquatic programs. • Develop aquatics and health related content for social media, flyers and brochures. • Provide counseling to individuals on aquatics activities and programs. • Develop and execute a tactical plan to meet program objectives. • Review, evaluate, and recommend changes to aquatics policies and procedures. • Organize and/or conduct lifeguard and water safety instructor certification classes for revenue generation and staff recruitment. • Work with Athletics Facilities and Pool Maintenance Staff on adherence to facility safety guidelines and cleanliness standards. • Manage and troubleshoot program operations as it pertains to the pools under supervision. • Implementation of policies and procedures to include facility access, emergency action plans, and standard operating procedures. • Maintain clean, safe, fun, innovative and inviting pools and programs. • Check for equipment safety and functionality • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with University and/ or community representatives, vendors and other regular contacts to meet the objectives of the aquatics program. • Serves on Recreation and Wellness, DAPER, and campus committees as directed. • Performs as a member of a high quality team and promotes teamwork in all interactions within the organization • Conducts other duties and assists other Recreation and Wellness staff as necessary.
Staff Management (40%) • Coordinate the aquatics program area for Recreation and Wellness including providing leadership and supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, lifeguards, water safety instructors and other staff. • Responsible for the management of staff, including recruitment, hiring, scheduling, motivation and retention • Plan and facilitate monthly/quarterly staff training. • Plan, organize and facilitate training, work assignments, evaluations, and if needed, disciplinary action for personnel. Trains staff in the use of each aquatic facility. • Develop and implement an orientation program for new aquatics staff. • Create and implement an employee procedure handbook for aquatics staff. • Train staff to proactively address safety and risk management. • Cultivate personnel as well as organize educational and professional development and provide on-going performance feedback. • Ensures staff have and maintain all required certifications. • Ensures customer encounters are courteous, respectful and efficient
Administrative Responsibilities (30%) • Gather, analyze and report on participation and revenue data. • Prepare and monitor the annual aquatic recreational programming budget to include staffing and revenue projections. • Communicate with the Recreation Programs Manager to ensure all aquatic program information is input into the registration software. • Implement, administer and evaluate day-to-day operations of aquatics program(s); solve problems and make decisions that impact the direction of the program. • Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommend changes to achieve the goals of the aquatics program. • Collect and compile monthly, quarterly and annual operational and statistical data to determine and improve methods and procedures to better serve the program and campus community. • Collect satisfaction surveys and customer response forms; create reports and recommend solutions. • Schedule both aquatic facilities for aquatics programming, recreational swim, club sports, intramural sports, university group use and special events. • Develop materials to support the success of the aquatics program. • Track progress with established goals. • Ensure prompt and effective verbal and written communication.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in the field of kinesiology, exercise science, recreation, or related field. Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Experience and knowledge in aquatic and fitness programming. • Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team. • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills • Highly organized and superb attention to detail. • Interpersonal skills and mature judgment required to interact effectively and collaboratively with a broad range of people, including program areas, stakeholders, vendors, and equipment suppliers, both individually and in groups. • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and set priorities in order to perform a high volume of detailed work with constant interruptions and meet expected deadlines and schedules. • Ability to use proper judgment around maintaining equipment while considering and working around a highly populated area. • Ability to routinely and independently exercise sound judgment in making decisions • Ability to be resourceful and creative in problem solving while not sacrificing quality or safety of environment. • Ability to coordinate daily activities including work scheduling, quality assurance, monitoring of activities, and supervision of personnel. • Knowledge of current risk management practices in recreational and aquatics facilities and student management strategies. • Demonstrated ability to provide a high standard of customer service. • Experience with MS Office products and database applications.
Certifications and Licenses • Current LGIT, WSI, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and First Aid certification required. • CPO or AFO preferred
