The Aquatics Program and Risk Management Coordinator reports to and assists the Assistant Director of Facilities Management and Operations with the daily logistical operations and management of all aquatic facilities and programs along with coordinating the Notre Dame RecSports Risk Management and Safety program.
This position has primary responsibility for developing and implementing aquatic programming that includes lifeguard training, swim lessons, American Red Cross certification courses, and other staff safety training. This position has additional responsibilities that include the management and operations of aquatic facilities at the Knute Rockne Memorial Gymnasium Pools and St. Joseph’s Beach and Boathouse.
The Aquatics Program and Risk Management Coordinator will also assist in budget development, scheduling and management of events, facility maintenance, and the purchasing and inventorying of equipment. Additionally, there are administrative duties related to completing usage and incident reports, and other applicable records.
The Aquatics Program and Risk Management Coordinator has personnel management responsibilities that include: recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, evaluating and retaining a staff of 20+ life guards, swim instructors and First Aid/CPR/AED instructors. This position supervises instructors; submits course records; procures and maintains an inventory of course materials; and ensures instructional staff certifications are up-to-date.
The Aquatics Program and Risk Management Coordinator is responsible for managing all First Aid and CPR/AED courses offered by RecSports which includes scheduling and advertising courses to the Notre Dame Community in collaboration with Notre Dame Fire Department – Medical Service Outreach.
This position will serve on the department’s Risk Management committee and collaborate with Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to ensure there is proper coverage of events, and that proper protocols and procedures are being adhered to.
This position will also be responsible for the inspection and maintenance of RecSports AEDs (Record inspections and schedule replacement) along with performing other risk management responsibilities as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Rockne Memorial Pool Supervision and Saint Joseph Beach & Boathouse Supervision
Develop, implement, and administer operating policies and procedures.
Schedule Lakefront Beach/Boathouse (Saint Joseph Beach) and 2 pools (Rockne Memorial): 1-25 yard and 1-smaller therapeutic pool.
Recruit hire, train, schedule, supervise, evaluate and retain lifeguard and swim instructor staff.
Oversee and ensure the daily maintenance and operations of natatorium by monitoring pool chemistry.
Maintain all required records related to staff certifications and pool maintenance.
Maintain proper operating condition of all aquatics recreation and safety equipment, and inform campus services when maintenance and repairs are needed.
Schedule life guard staff and summer programming at lake/beach and boathouse.
Oversee daily maintenance and operations of St. Joseph’s Beach (summer months).
Maintain all required records related to staff certifications and pool(s) and beach maintenance.
Maintain an inventory of aquatic supplies and recreation equipment as well as organization of Aquatics storage areas.
Able to cover instructor and lifeguard shifts and find substitute when needed in “on-call” and emergency situations.
Experience teaching aquatics instructional and lifeguard courses in the university environment.
Risk Management – Coordination & Supervision
Oversee scheduling and delivery of all training and certification classes in First Aid/CPR/AED/Lifeguard/Bloodborne Pathogens/Boat Safety (Small Craft Safety)/Water Safety Instructor, as well as instructor level classes.
Upon requested conduct swim test/evaluation for required Club Sport participants.
Assist in the development, implementation, and review of safety, risk management, and emergency response plan throughout RecSports.
Serve on RecSports Risk Management committee.
Monitor First Aid/CPR/AED certifications are up-to-date for all RecSports staff with attention to frontline student staff certifications in standard First Aid and CPR/AED.
Collaborate with the Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to maintain an inventory of first aid supplies for the department and regularly audit first aid kits.
Develop and implement policies and procedures Emergency Action Plans, Employee Manual and Incident Reporting.
Maintain requirements to be an American Red Cross Authorized Facility Provider.
Annually inspect and maintain AEDs and track records of inspections and battery replacement.
Perform other risk management responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities & Duties
Represent the department on campus wide committees.
Assist with special events.
Attend and participate in Division of Student Affairs events, programs, and training.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree with a major in recreation administration, sport management, leisure studies, physical education, kinesiology, or comparable degree
Must possess the following certifications: Current certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI), and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatics Facility Operator (APO)
2 years of demonstrated experience working in aquatic facility management and operations, aquatics programming and administration, staff development, risk management, and hiring/training/supervising staff
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Physical Education, or related field.
2 to 4 years of demonstrated experience with a comprehensive understanding of university recreation center aquatics facility operations, programs and services.
Evidence of leadership experience and a commitment to student learning and development.
