The Associate Director for Operations reports to the Director of Recreational Sports and serves as a member of the departmental leadership team providing strategic direction, facility project management, guidance and oversight in emergency and risk management, promotion of inclusivity initiatives, policy development and promotion, personnel management, fiscal accountability, communication and team cohesion. The Associate Director is charged with the responsibility of overseeing daily operations and strategic planning for all indoor and outdoor recreational facilities while promoting safety, system efficiency, sustainability, inclusivity, customer service and cleanliness. Additionally, the Associate Director will coordinate and lead the departmental emergency and risk management plans. Associate Director will build relationships with assistant directors who manage programs to provide activities that enrich the campus experience and encourage healthy lifestyles. The Associate Director of Operations will promote member experience through customer service initiatives and will develop and maintain partnerships within Student Affairs and across campus as well as external relationships. The Associate Director leads a team including the Assistant Director of Operations and Risk Management, McComas Hall facility manager, War Memorial Hall facility manager, SRA/Outdoor Field Turf facility manager and the Custodial Team Manager, custodial staff and ~200 student staff. This position has been designated as essential personnel during inclement / hazardous weather and other emergencies. In addition, this position requires a variable work schedule. Evening and weekend work responsibilities, as needed; be on-call to provide leadership during times programs and facilities are operating; attend professional development opportunities, as assigned; other duties as assigned.
Master’s degree in Higher Education, Recreation, Sport Management, Public Administration, Business, Construction Management or related field. Or significant years of relevant professional level experience managing indoor and outdoor recreation facilities and/or construction and renovation projects. Significant experience with personnel supervision. Ability to interpret laws, rules, and regulations governing the operations of a state university Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Proven ability to work positively and effectively in a team environment and empower student employees. Current CPR-PR/AED for professional rescuer, First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogen certification or ability to obtain within 30 days.
Recreation programming experience such as development, implementation, and assessment of successful programs aquatics, recreational sports (intramural and club), fitness, wellness, aquatics, and outdoor adventures. Experience with large scale facility construction and renovation projects. Familiarity with a facility software management system like Fusion, etc.

The Department of Recreational Sports operates within the Division of Student Affairs. The Department maintains two recreation/wellness facilities: McComas Hall and War Memorial Hall. McComas Hall offers three basketball/volleyball courts, an eight-lane indoor swimming pool, a weight training and cardiovascular workout area, two fitness studios, spin studio, fitness assessment center, TRX and core area, locker and shower facilities, equipment check out, an elevated jogging track, and a lounge area. The facility is also home to the Student Health and Counseling Centers. War Memorial Hall offers an indoor swimming pool and diving well, 6 basketball courts, 13 racquetball courts, 2 wallyball courts, a gymnastics room, locker and shower facilities, a handball court, a weight room, volleyball courts, a squash court, saunas, a dance/fitness room, and a multi-purpose room.
