The Division of Student Life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Campus Recreation (RecSports). This is an exempt, 12-month, full-time, non-tenure track staff position.
The Department of Recreational Sports (RecSports) serves students, faculty, and staff by providing a wide variety of programs and well-maintained facilities, including intramural sports, outdoor recreation, fitness programs, aquatics, sports cubs, and informal recreation. The Director is responsible for providing the overall administrative vision, leadership, and management of the department. The Director reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Life, and oversees the 138,000 sq. ft. Tennessee Student Recreation Center for Students (TRECS), 14 outdoor recreation fields, 61,000 sq. ft. Student Aquatic Center (61,000 sq. ft), and a 50-meter outdoor pool.
The Director supervises two Associate Directors, and indirectly supervises full-time employees and approximately 350 student employees. The Director guides the establishment of the department’s strategic plan; directs the creation, implementation, and enforcement of department priorities, policies, and practices; and develops guidelines governing acceptable use of space and hours of operation. The Director also establishes guidelines and practices for continuity of business operations; coordinates safety/security and emergency plans; develops long-range plans for maintenance and facility improvements; and evaluates/ensures departmental effectiveness and efficiency through ongoing assessment efforts. Additionally, the Director has responsibility for ensuring all programs and services reflect diversity and inclusion for the campus community; develops departmental revenue and expenditure budgets; and administers all aspects of human resource management (hiring, supervision, evaluation, and professional development).
The Director is expected to establish and maintain good working relationships and collaborations with internal and external constituencies, and campus/divisional partners to achieve departmental mission and goals; provide leadership for university/division committees and initiatives, and represent the University at appropriate state, regional, and national professional organizations.
Required Qualifications, Education: This position requires a Master’s degree in sports administration, recreation, higher education, or related field.
Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible professional leadership experience in organized sports programs. Demonstrated experience in budget planning and human resource management.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: • Ability to successfully perform managerial responsibilities (planning, organization leadership, budget, personnel, program evaluation, facility management, and operations) in a complex regulatory, legal, policy, and political environment; • Ability to work with diverse constituencies; • Ability to handle multiple work priorities as well as organize and plan projects effectively; • Ability to exercise good judgment; • Ability to lead a team of seasoned staff in the provision of programs and services; • Knowledge of the role of, trends, and best practices related to campus recreation; • Knowledge of university-level organizational structures and communication channels; • Knowledge of developmental issues of college students and in the advancement of policies/procedures supporting student success; and • Strong interpersonal skills, including strong oral, written, and listening communication capabilities.
Preferred Qualifications, Experience: • Experience in the administration and management of recreation facilities (indoor and outdoor).
