The Graduate Assistant of Fitness & Wellness in the department of Campus Recreation is a two-semester commitment under the guidance of the Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness, renewable for a second academic year. The Graduate Assistant works in conjunction with the Assistant Director and Coordinator of Fitness & Wellness to provide quality fitness/wellness programs and services.
The University of Cincinnati's comprehensive fitness and wellness program includes group fitness, personal training, fitness testing, nutrition services, fitness floor supervision, special event planning, and wellness programming across multiple facilities. Vital to this position is a substantial knowledge base in exercise science or related field, as well as a strong commitment to health and wellbeing, teamwork, customer service, staff development, and principle-oriented leadership.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
Assist in leading a comprehensive fitness & wellness program, providing direct supervision over specific areas based on individual strengths and opportunities for development.
Assist in strategic planning and goal development for future of fitness & wellness program.
Assist in recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation of group fitness instructors, personal trainers, registered dietitians, and fitness floor staff.
Plan and facilitate staff development opportunities.
Teach Health Promotion & Education academic courses as needed per year, which may include a group exercise or personal training prep course.
Assist in coordinating group fitness and premium fitness class schedules between two facilities.
Assist with programming to provide quality fitness programs and activities.
Compile instructor and participant survey feedback.
Assist with implementing and maintaining Campus Recreation policies and procedures.
Assist with payroll process for contracted staff.
Demonstrate effective communication through written and verbal interactions with staff.
Create partnerships within the university community to develop new customized fitness initiatives.
Attend regular fitness supervisor meetings.
Collect and analyze data to develop effective program outcomes and improve program evaluation.
Assist with coordinating, staffing and facilitating health fairs and tabling events.
Assist in designing marketing and promotional materials for related programs, events and initiatives.
Instruct monthly CPR/AED/First Aid for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers courses and review sessions.
Maintain weekly 20 office hours as instructed by supervisor.
*In addition to the academic year, summer work opportunities are available with hourly pay.
Bachelors Degree in exercise science, kinesiology, human movement, or health-related field.
Acceptance into the Health Promotion & Education (Exercise Management or Community Health) Graduate Program at the University of Cincinnati (applicants may apply to this position before acceptance into the academic program, as long as the application to the academic program is submitted by February 1st, 2019).
Previous experience working in Campus Recreation or fitness setting.
Experience in staff management and leadership.
Desire to gain further knowledge in the areas of Fitness & Wellness.
Current Nationally accredited group fitness and/or personal training certifications or desire to acquire.
Must complete a clear criminal background check through University of Cincinnati Public Safety (done following selection of candidate).
Nationally accredited group fitness, personal training, and/or other specialty certifications.
Ability to teach various group fitness class formats
Experience in staff development and event/program planning.
*A 3.0 GPA is required for admission into the Graduate Academic Program.
*Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores are optional and not required for admission.

Additional Salary Information: This position provides an anticipated stipend of $11,343 and in-state/out-of-state tuition waiver for the fall 2019 and spring 2020 semesters (renewable for a second year).
The full-time M.S. program in Health Promotion & Education allows students to complete all requirements within one academic year (during the fall, spring, and summer semesters), however, there is also opportunity to obtain valuable Graduate Certificates and Professional Development experience in a second year. Students may concentrate in either the Public & Community Health or Exercise Management track. Any summer tuition is the responsibility of the student.
