Primary Purpose of the Position
This position entails handling acute care of injuries, clinical evaluations, therapeutic modalities, education in injury prevention, medical referrals, and performance strategies. Additionally, one must have sufficient experience in dealing with concussion evaluations, self-management, and be adequate in reporting individuals to healthcare providers. This position hires, trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates all athletic training staff members, and develops, implements, and promotes safe training programs. Primary care will be provided for club and intramural sports including higher risk teams and travelling accommodations are to be expected. Taping and necessary treatment for athletes prior, during, and after competition is expected alongside sight injury evaluations. Collaboration with East Carolina Athletic Training and Sports Medicine programs is encouraged to receive additional support. Applicant must be Board of Certification (BOC) certified. This position has primary responsibility for establishing risk management procedures relevant to this functional area and regularly conducts staff training and audits. He/she will represent the University at state, regional, and national conferences when the staff deems attendance most appropriate. The Assistant Director reports to the Associate Director of Leadership and Programs and works under the supervision of the ECU Student Health Services Medical Director. The position completes occasional sports care hours at the ECU Student Health Services center. The work of the Assistant Director is reviewed through daily interactions, observations, meetings, and through semester and/or annual evaluations.
Specific functions/responsibilities include:
Fiscal management related to athletic training services.
Provide short and long-range planning and fiscal management related to program administration.
Develop, monitor, and project all budget requests/requisitions associated with the administration of the CRW athletic training services.
Assist with preparation of an annual athletic training budget for department.
Research, select, and purchase equipment and supplies for the area(s) of responsibility.
Makes capital improvement project recommendations by providing research and assessment relevant to area needs and product availability.
Management and supervision of personnel.
Recruit, hire, train, and supervise student employees to include athletic training Graduate Assistants, student trainers, and other related personnel.
Evaluate student employees in accordance with departmentally prescribed procedures on an annual basis.
Provide a diverse offering of educational and motivational workshops and specific job training for student staff to effect cooperation among departmental program areas. This represents a significant process dictated by semester student academic class schedules and graduation/retention factors.
Facilitate a team approach of staff to effect cooperation among departmental program areas.
Facility administration, development, maintenance, and management.
Responsible for the establishment of risk management procedures for all areas of responsibility.
Daily upkeep, maintenance, and repairs of the athletic training departmental equipment.
Develop and implement adequate checklists, reports, and records regarding facility, equipment, and training room maintenance.
Administration, management, and operation of the CRW athletic training program.
Provide administrative oversight for the athletic training program.
Establish and enforce policies and procedures relating to the athletic training environment.
Coordinate marketing and publicity efforts with appropriate staff to adequately publicize athletic training activities.
Develop, monitor, and project all budget requests/requisitions associated with athletic training.
Schedule student staff (Gas and student trainers) to supervise athletic training during all hours of operation.
Provide appropriate risk management procedures in the performance of duties associated recreation facilities. Enforce OSHA guidelines and adhere to national standards and accepted practices in the operating of athletic training facilities.
Responsible for providing follow up to participants who have been injured at a CRW program/facility and have filled out an accident report. Keep accurate documentation of the follow-up.
Responsible for organizing and filing all CRW accident reports.
Serve on the CRW Risk Management committee.
Conduct regular assessment, correlate data, and file reports as needed for Athletic Training Program.
Manage Athletic Training Program portion of CRW website and related technologies including Connect 2, Orgsync and Fusion.
Specific Athletic Training duties
Coordinate the supervision, prevention, care, management, and disposition of injuries and illnesses sustained by student-athletes.
Maintain appropriate documentation of all injuries and illnesses to student-athletes.
Maintain current knowledge and skills of standards of practice in the field of Athletic Training/Sports Medicine as established by the NATA, NCAA, and other appropriate, recognized organizations.
Responsible for the management of the CRW Concussion Protocol
Responsible for the CRW Return to Play/Class Protocol in conjunction with the Dean of Students/Provost’s Office(s).
Provide clinical service for drop-in/informal recreation, intramural, club, and instructional program participants during clinical hours at CRW and Student Health Services facilities.
Responsible for offering programs of strength training, conditioning, and rehabilitation for students as deemed necessary.
Advise in the purchasing, proper use, and proper fit of protective equipment.
Manage in budget preparation as well as inventory and supply management.
Adhere to Office of Equal Opportunity /Title IX Coordinator office as a responsible employee regarding incidents of sexual or gender-based harm or discrimination.
Other miscellaneous duties
Occasional physical work is required. The type of work varies from light to heavy depending on the activity and the season. Duration of work is relatively short (1-2 hours in length) with intensity varying greatly.
The Assistant Director serves as a liaison from the CRW department in contact with other university personnel associated with Intercollegiate Athletics, the School of Health and Human Performance, the Department of Infectious Disease Control Office of ECU, Environmental Health and Safety, ECU Police, and Student Health.
Responsible for reviewing and updating departmental manuals regarding athletic training and safety services.
Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training
Certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA-BOC) and a license to practice in the State of North Carolina required.
One year of professional (or related) experience
Knowledge of theory/practice of athletic training
Experience in hiring, training, and supervising personnel
Strong written and verbal communication and computer utilization skills
Ability to work evening, weekends, and holidays as playing and practice season schedule dictates
Demonstrated experience with fiscal management within a recreational sports-based program
Ability to lift 25 lbs. with appropriate accommodation
