Eastern Michigan University – Recreation and Intramural Sports (Rec/IM) Department in Ypsilanti, MI seeks dynamic individuals for our team to fill the Graduate Assistant positions in the areas of Fitness Programming/Summer Camp, Marketing/Member Services and Aquatics/Risk Management. Graduate Assistants serve as para-professionals in a thriving student development environment in support of the Rec/IM’s core goals and values. Positions are for Fall 2019 with an expectation of a 2-year tenure through Spring 2021. Fitness and Camps – The graduate assistant for Fitness Programming and Summer Camp reports directly to the Assistant Director of Fitness and Camp. The GA is responsible for hiring, training, supervision, management, and development of Personal Training staff, Group Fitness Instructors, and Weight Room Staff. The Graduate Assistant will also be responsible for the planning, development, and registration of the Rec/IM Summer Day Camp for children ages 7 - 12. Marketing and Member Services - The graduate assistant for Marketing and Member Services reports directly to the Assistant Director of Student Personnel and receives additional support from the Senior Department Secretary. The GA is responsible for the hiring, training, supervision, management, and development of marketing and membership student staff. The Graduate Assistant will also be responsible for the development of marketing materials, customer recruitment and retention efforts, creation of print/digital media and assistance with the supervision and direction of marketing student staff. Aquatics and Risk Management- The graduate assistant for Aquatics and Risk Management reports directly to the Aquatics Facilities Coordinator and receives additional support from the Assistant Director overseeing Risk Management. The GA is responsible for the hiring, training, supervision, management, and development of Lifeguarding student staff, setup, and production of EMU and external swimming and diving events, and assistance in the management and maintenance of the recreation aquatic facilities. Furthermore, the GA will assist in revamping Rec/IM risk management procedures including but not limited to, emergency action plans (EAP’s), risk management training, and assistance in maintaining CPR/First Aid records for student staff. Compensation and Tuition Support:
Stipend: $7,524 (total for 1st year) for Fall and Winter Semesters. $8,276 (total for 2nd year). Additional employment is encouraged during the summer between academic years of assistantship. (16 weeks – 29 hour maximum)
Period of Employment: August 26 – April 27 (36 weeks). Includes 2 weeks off during Winter and 1 week off in Spring.
Tuition support: For a full-time, academic-year GA appointment, the University provides a tuition scholarship for up to 18 credit hours in each academic year (September 1 to August 31) of the assistantship. The student is responsible for additional fees not covered by tuition (i.e. general fee, student center fee and technology fee), new student record initiation fee, registration fee, late registration fee, drop fees or late fees applied when bills are not paid.
Note: Offers of assistantships are contingent upon acceptance into a graduate program at Eastern Michigan University. Preferred graduate programs of study for Rec/IM GA's are Higher Education, Sports Management, and Exercise Physiology.
