The University of Houston, Department of Campus Recreation seeks a self-motivated and enthusiastic, professional to join our dynamic team of recreational leaders. The Fitness Coordinator is responsible for group fitness, personal and small group training, Fit4Hire programs, and ACE certification courses. The Coordinator is responsible for student leadership, supervision and mentoring, coordination of program resources, risk management, staffing, policies and procedures. This position reports to the Assistant Director, Fitness.
Recruit, hire, train, schedule and evaluate group fitness instructors for a 50+ class per week schedule. May conduct group fitness classes and/or fill in for instructors.
Create, develop, and implement fitness programs and activities including special events, small group training, & Fit4Hire programs.
Recruit, hire, train, assign clients, and evaluate personal trainers to ensure program quality and client experience. May conduct personal training or group sessions, and other fitness services.
Assist with the day to day operation of the Fitness Zone floor, respond to participant questions and concerns, monitor inventory, maintain fitness equipment and make recommendations for replacements.
Assist in the development of strategic planning for fitness; develop, implement and administer assessments/evaluations related to student development including student learning outcomes, evaluation of programs, services and staff.
Assist with risk management to ensure compliance with university policy and procedures as well as industry standards.
Supervise one Fitness Graduate Assistant and one Dietetic Intern.
Participate in coordination of certification or CEC courses with national or local organizations.
Provide input in budget management; including revenue generation, equipment inventory and purchases. Maintain inventory system for all program equipment and semi-annual reports.
Perform other job-related duties as required.
Education: A Bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology, Health Education, Physical Education, Sports Management, Recreation or related field. Master's degree is preferred.
Experience: The ideal applicant will have a minimum of 2 years of progressive experience with fitness and personal training, program development, including fitness certifications. Paid graduate assistantship positions may qualify for work experience.
Skills: Demonstrated knowledge of national trends and practices in fitness programming and various formats. Effective organizational, management, leadership, communication, interpersonal skills, computer literacy. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required. Applicants should demonstrate ability to lead and manage part-time and student staff. Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as demonstrated leadership ability are also desirable.
Certifications: Must have valid Personal Training certification and Group Fitness Instructor certification through AFAA, ACE, ACSM, NSCA, or NASM, or a nationally accredited organization; Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) and First Aid certifications; and must obtain CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor certification within first year of employment.
