The Kent State University (KSU) Department of Recreational Services announces a Competitive Sports Graduate Assistantship for Fall 2019 through Spring 2021. (2) positions pending funding availability.
KSU Department of Recreational Services Competitive Sports Area: The Competitive Sports area consists of Intramural Sports, Club Sports, Community Leagues and Outdoor Facilities. The Competitive Sports Graduate Assistant will be responsible for assisting with the overall management and coordination of the Competitive Sports program area. The Competitive Sports Graduate Assistant will support the Competitive Sports Professional Staff by assisting with the day-to-day management of the Intramural Sports program & Club Sports program; including program implementation, student staff supervision, training, and development. This position may also have additional responsibilities with Community League programming and outdoor facilities management.
The Competitive Sports Graduate Assistant will assist with the administration of all Competitive Sports programming. Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Assist with the overall management of the Intramural Sports program area & Club Sports Program area (additional opportunities to assist with Community Leagues are available)
Assist with recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, managing, and evaluating approximately 30-40 student staff including intramural sports officials, intramural sports supervisors, and club sports supervisors
Assist with organizing, scheduling, and managing team sports, individual/dual sports, tournaments, and activities
Provide leadership, constructive feedback, and evaluations for student employees and club managers
Assist with the overall development of intramural and club sport supervisors and student employees
Demonstrate competency in various sport offerings, and an ability to effectively teach/train others
Enforce university, department and program area policies and procedures for staff and participants
Conduct, plan, and lead sports trainings clinics, captains meetings, and club officer meetings
Provide on-site supervision during intramural and club sports activities
Assist with participant conflict, emergency situations, and disciplinary conduct meetings
Assist in marketing and promoting all competitive sports programming
Communicate effectively with participants, team captains, club officers, student staff and other department/division staff
Maintain clear and timely communication with the Competitive Sports Professional Staff
Provide excellent customer service; in-person, and via telephone, email, and social media
Review and update program policies, procedures, sport rules and training manuals
Assist with maintaining the Intramural Sports website (IMLeagues) and program results for assigned activities
Assist with maintaining the Club Sport website (DoSportsEasy) and club information for assigned clubs
Assist in evaluation and assessment of departmental programs
Remain current with industry trends and best practices and implement pertinent innovations
Serve as a liaison between student and professional staff, participants, and student groups
Other duties as assigned
As a result of the graduate assistantship, the student will develop Teamwork/Collaboration skills through various partnerships with numerous departments and organizations across campus.
As a result of the graduate assistantship, the student will develop Leadership skills through the use of interpersonal skills to coach and develop student employees.
As a result of the graduate assistantship, the student will develop Critical Thinking/Problem Solving skills through day-to-day decision making processes. Analyzing situations, making sounds decisions and overcoming problems.
As a result of the graduate assistantship, the student will develop Verbal/Written Communications skills through opportunities of presenting in-front of large audiences, leading staff meetings and trainings, as well as, interacting with participants.
As a result of the graduate assistantship, the student will develop Professionalism/Work Ethic through personal accountability of job responsibilities. An opportunity of being a vital piece of the Competitive Sports Professional Staff, working towards developing and delivering a successful program each school year.

Bachelor’s Degree conferred at the time the Graduate Assistantship begins
Graduate Assistantship candidates must be admitted to an academic graduate program unconditionally
Ability to maintain good academic standing and must carry a minimum of eight hours of graduate credits during each semester of the academic year appointment
Appointees may not accept any other paid employment within the university during their appointment
Current CPR and First Aid certifications (available through the Department before employment begins)
Possess strong oral and written communication skills and knowledge of the recreation profession
Experience working with college students in a recreational sports setting
Experience officiating collegiate intramural sports; experience officiating a variety of sports is preferred
Certified for officiating at the high school level is preferred
Experience supervising student staff to include planning and/or leading student staff meetings
Basic understanding of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)
Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including non-traditional work hours on nights and weekends.
Additional Salary Information: Stipend and Benefits: $7,000 for 9 month appointment (20 work hours per week) Paid semi-monthly. Second year renewable based upon satisfactory performance. Waiver of fees up to 9 hours per semester (18 per year), this rate does not apply to summer semester. This rate does not apply to summer semester, Assistance with health insurance costs (if necessary). Professional development funding is available. Summer employment available (hourly rate). Internship placement opportunities available.
